Zoladex

Happy new year, I am on my way to get my first Zoladex injection. Just read a few blogs and now I am completely scared about starting this drug.

I am 42 and have early breast cancer. I have had a lumpectomy, axillary lymph node dissection, 6 rounds of chemo and will have 33 sessions of radio (I have only just started).

Can anyone let me know their experiences with this drug? I am now feeling like I should back out about having this treatment. I will start Tamoxifen after radio which my Dr thinks I will be on for 10 years.

Also is this drug on the PBS??

Please help

Thanks

  • I am actually taking tamoxifen as well as having the Zoladex, I think it's because of my age. I had trouble sleeping after the first Zoladex injection, I think this has decreased but I have always suffered from insomnia so not sure how much I can blame on the drug. I was also told that I could have my ovaries out, at this stage I'll give that a miss. Good luck to both of you, I sincerely hope that are feeling well Roxanne

  • Hi Sue, I guess if it stops the risk of cancer then... I have had one injection and have had night sweats and am having trouble sleeping...but the magnesium helps a lot. Shall let you know after next one! I too will probably have my ovaries out and wonder why they don't do that straight away? Am luckier then most so will put up with the little discomfort zoladex brings. Have a mum at the school I work at on the same journey but she has been given the unlucky stick of chemo and is doing it really tough so whenever I see her I thank my lucky stars. Good luck with your recovery. Exercise has helped me as lot and accepting help from others. And keep finding the funny side of things...
  • Thank you for that- am hoping all will be good and as my sister said cancer is nastier so lesser of two evils..stay well
  • Sorry Robyn, I replied to this via my phone (well I thought I had) and it doesn't seem to have shown up.

I was like you, had googled Zoladex and read alot of those blogs and was worried. I havent had many side effects, I have now had 5 injections and I am feeling ok.

The first was the worse, I have convinced myself that I could feel the implant and I wasnt sleeping and I was thinking that it wasnt worth it but I it passed.

Goodluck - I hope you are feeling ok.

  • I have just had my injection and have just read the bloody zoladex blogs and am now a little bit worried about the whole side effects with it. Am wondering if it is worth the trouble?

  • Hi Roxy,

This is Annie from BCNA. Hopefully some women will jump on here and share their experiences with you. In the meantime, I thought I'd mention that Zoladex is listed on the PBS for certain types of breast cancer. Your medical oncologist can let you know whether you qualify for a PBS rebate, given your particular type of breast cancer.

    All the best Roxy,
