Yey! I have my plan

I have just returned home from a three hour stint at the hospital.  Like everyone else new to this journey I was apprehensive and anxious.

The new Gold Coast University Hospital is beautiful and everyone from rececption right through to my oncologist were all very warm and friendly.

On arrival a nurse recorded my obs and it was back to the waiting room to fill out a form about my home situation etc while I waited to see the oncologist.

The oncologist was very nice (handsome too)   He asked me what I understood about my BC and then he filled in the gaps.  I had my list of questions with me, which he answered completely.

After I saw the oncologist  I was directed back to reception to receive my appointment dates for my first two treatments, the first being on Friday 10th and second on 31/1.  They were kind enough to organize my first one to follow straight after an occupational therapy appointment at 8:00 am on same day.

Next I spent about 30 mins with the Cancer Nurse Consultant.  She explained the treatment to me and possible side effects.  She also discussed my fears and anxieties and has put me down to have appointment with psychologist.  I am happy to do this because I would ilke someone outside the family to talk to and  to learn some skills in challenging my fearful thoughts.  I was also given a tour of the chemo treatment area.

I have been given the all clear to return to work (in some capacity) if I want to except on days 7 - 10 of cycle.

Lastly, it was blood tests ready for next week and then I was free to go.  Armed with a big folder full of reading material, phone numbers, available services and a head full of extra knowledge I now feel calm and full of hope in commencing the next stage of this journey.

I am in Vietnam at the end of week three after first round of TC. Have also been in Cambodia for the previous four days climbing Angkor Wat. Tiring but wonderful for the soul. Chemo sucks but life doesn't. My husband has been the fusspot in the family. I think they feel so helpless. Shaved my head on New Years Day as the itch became too much and only had about 10% left anyway. My second round was due yesterday but is delayed a week until I finished my trip.

    Kind thoughts to you

  • Hi Deanne,  I was very appreciative of how smoothly everything went today.  All the info re chemo drugs is a little overwhelming but I am grateful that  this treatment is available and that by the end of January I will have already had two treatments.

My husband seems to be coping very well but I get the impression that he thinks I am over anxious and read to much into the knowledge I have gained.  Wondering if he is right or it is impossible for him to completely understand how anxiety producing this situation is.  Maybe he has more faith than I do right now.   Oh well, we all handle things differently and so long as he isn't spinning out -  that is a good thing.

Thanks again for your support Deanne.

  • Wow, the hospital sounds very organised. I'm glad you are feeling informed and looked after. It is a daunting prospect to be facing chemo but feeling supported and confident in the medical team makes everything a little bit easier. As Robyn says it always a good feeling to have the 'plan' and know what you need to do. Hope it all goes well, let us know how you go. Take care. Deanne xxx
