worrying worrying - again. advice please.

yet again I am worrying myself silly - I am on track for 2 years post diagnosis BC free BUT, I keep on fretting about metasteses.

I know that my bone aches are a wretched Arimidex side effect, but in the last couple of days I have developed a horrible cough. No sore throat, no head cold, no congestion - just a deep cough. Do I ask about it ? Could it be a lung tumour ? When do these worries go away / Or don't they ?

I know someone will have inifinite wisdom here to snap me out of this. Or to tell me what to do. Or both.

thanks

magicmum

  • i like the three day rule-- i will use that myself. other strategies that i use are to try to remember the last time i had that worry and i dont really recall the details but that is gone..this feeling will pass too...i see this worry as a normal part of the journey so i dont feel bad when it comes up...or worried about having this worry; i try to greet it like a good friend even...ahh you again!  i sometimes self soothe--im fine, everything is ok.and perhaps to gently massage the area.  i remind myself that beefore cancer i was a bit obivious to all my sensations in my body and now i am a bit overly sensitive to all my sensations.  Occasionally i confront fear a bit head on--and reduce it back to what is behind that--death--so then  i go 'more of the same' --ie ive had lots of good experiences and living longer is just more of that---massage and sexuality, exercise are all good ways of getting back my healthy strong body back after diagnosis, surgery and radiation. effexor can be useful for getting anxiety support as well as side effects of tomaxafin.  reminding myself, or noticing that  the worry around reoccurance/death etc do get better with tim; i appreciate the space' that   feels like well being  that is being expeirenced more and more.  I use old tricks from yoga about breathing, or breathing into area of concern.  i use language mindfully about and notice influence on my well being. although radiation gave me quite strong feelings of fatigue; what i   take from thtatxperience is how good it felt when that lilfted, and it did intoo a short time, i also had a skin tear that rejuvenated itself almost over night sogood to focus on healing and all well in the world.  my gp always says 'i count my blessings' and that is a nice phrase so my mind goes to what is working and going well.

increase my intake of capsicum, tumeric and carrot......!

  • Hey magicmum

Sorry to hear you are finding you are feeling so anxious about this forever ongoing monkey on our back that we have to carry with us for the rest of our life following BC.  Some of us deal with it better than others but I am sure the majority of us constantly have these concerns.

I would definitely follow the girls advice and go to your GP etc. to check it out properly and give you peace of mind.

Also why don't you see about talking to someone professionally about your anxiety of a reoccurence.  Sometimes talking it out with someone who can relate will make it so much better for you.

Good luck with this and I am hoping that it is a just a naughtly little bug that has decided to say Happy New Year to you and the GP can get it sorted out quickly for you.

Let us know how you go hun.

  • Hi Magicmum, I think we all worry, and if you are at all like me,the worry ends up by creating very real sympptoms. I tend to be a worrywort, and my mind can really magnify symptoms which usually go away as soon as I have seen the Dr or had a scan etc. My Sydney GP is great, and will do anything to ease my worry. See your Dr and put your mind at rest. Your cough is probably the start of a cold, that is starting in your chest first. Not all colds start as a sore throat. My last two colds started this way, and when the second one arrived within 6 months of the first, I too thought it could be nasty. Anyway, both became colds within a week, and then both disappeared a few weeks later, leaving a residual cough, which has now gone. Love Chris xx
  • I agree with Hazel, no sense just worrying about it. Get it checked and put your mind at rest. We are all in the same boat when it comes to this issue of worrying about every little niggle. I have a friend who just passed the 10 year mark and she always says the doctors never mind checking anything out as they like her proactive approach to her health. All the best for 2014. Deanne xxx

  • I have no infinite wisdom and I'm a relatively newbie to this site, however, i can understand the fears. I think we will always have it in the back of our minds, what if? If you are concerned with the cough, then it's worthwhile getting it checked out. It might be nothing to worry about and if it is, then the earliest it can be see to, all the better. Wishing you all the best, and I hope you have a happy healthy 2014.
