I think it is very important for every woman to find the best treatment path for their situation and not be swayed by fear or misconceptions that a mastectomy or double mastectomy is the best course for all.
My situation with location of tumor and DCIS and size of breast resulted in a single mastectomy being the best for me. I am satisfied that with my hormone positive cancer (no family genetic connection), a second mastectomy as a preventative measure would do more harm than good. The best course of action for me is to live well, take hormone therapy and have regular checks. I don't mind using an external prosthesis. I am confident that for my situation, this gives me the best possible chance of survival.
I think it is important for women to read balanced, fact based accounts of treatment options like your story, Meg. It can help others to feel more comfortable with following the best medical advice for them. Take care and good luck with your pathology results. Deanne xxx
