My (medical) costs have been about $6,000 -with Medicare refund.
I had an expander put in with my mastectomy. I had to pay up front for it $1,200 - nothing back from Medicare. The rest was for hospital, surgeon & anaesthetist . There was extra for petrol & accomodation for my partner.
I intend claiming all my out of pocket expenses through Tax as well.
I do not have private cover.
