“What your doctor may not tell you about breast cancer” by John R. Lee MD
I refer to my previous blog of the same title asking if anyone had read this book. As my husband and I have finished reading the book here, as promised, is my opinion. I am NOT suggesting the information in this book is good or bad !
The book has confirmed my original beliefs surrounding breast cancer, the causes and treatments. I am at peace with the knowledge of what contributed to my breast cancer and with the decisions I have made re my own treatment. My initial mastectomy, which was done with no other options presented was, I do believe, the best that could have been done.
The (not yet discussed with my specialists) choice of a prophylactic mastectomy on the other side – I am undecided and need to put more research and thought into this. I am also still on the fence about reconstruction, needing to investigate the pros and cons of the methods available and what, if anything, will be gained by doing so. I wonder if the medical/physical, emotional and financial costs are in balance. I should tell you that I was not a contender for skin sparing or nipple sparing surgery so that is also more surgery to consider.
By reading the book you will not only get a ‘good bedtime read’ but you may find there some questions which you would like to ask your treatment team.
I will say no more, except to say the book is an interesting read.
Kind thoughts to all as you struggle to make your own decisions over time.
Summer :-)
