weight gain

I had lumoectomy back in April..have finished 6 rounds of chemo  & about to start radiation next week but i have gained 10 kg & i hate it. I have had weight prob in the past & i know how difficult it is for me to ,lose weight. No one told me side affect was weight gain. I used to go dancing 5 or 6 nights a week but with treatment have had no energy to do anything other than go to work. I feel like i have lost myself.

  • thank you all for the positive encouragement.& hearing others experiences helps too..i will be back to my oldself one day..i just wanted it  now..i .have started walking so hopefully i'll be able to continue during radiation..generally i do eat heathily but during the worst days of treatment i ate what i craved. Being so inactive has been hard so lets hope my energy is back soon.  Jayne

  • I put on 14 kgs after having 4 x ac and 12 x paclitaxel..unfortunately food is my friend and I ate my way through it. I guess we have to do our best to get through somehow. I finished radio therapy 30/6/2011 and was feeling like crap. I decided that I had to help myself. Weight loss for me is a bitch I hate it because I love love love my food. Anyway it had to be done. I joined weight watchers and have lost about 7kgs so am half way there but am also starting to feel a little better and have more energy. I also saw a naturopath and accupuncturist. I felt like I have been given a second chance so I have to help myself now. I am walking 40 mins 5 days per week. Once you finish your treatment give yourself  little time for the dust to settle and then make a plan for your recovery. Its hard at the start but it gets better...good luck xox

  • I have got used to my extra weight - I don't like it but I have accepted that "it is how it is" for now.  When I am back fit and well then I will try harder to lose it.  In the meantime I am aware of it but it doesn't rule me.  The extra weight actually takes away the "drawn" look and if I wear the appropriate clothing I can "hide" it.  Don't be hard on yourself - your body has been through heaps. • I put on a few kilos-just enough to make my clothes hug me.I've decided to embrace the flab and not worry too much.I basically eat healthy and portion control but will eat some chocolate when I damn well feel like it!!Cut yourself some rope jets, your energy will come back down the track and you can pick up dancing again. You do lose your identity for awhile cos you're bald, flabby, lethargic and confidence can pummet. It took me a good 8 months post chemo to get my mojo back so be kind to yourself as you still have more treatment to go yet.

  • Hi Jets

Yes I put on weight with my treatment. Have always had a problem there but didn't expect to gain as much as I did. I think with the stress of my diagnosis I was comfort eating for awhile but am on Zoloft tabs for depression and am sure these are not helping the weight  either. Still I try to increase exercise when I'm not too tired and battle on !

    All the best

  • Hi,

It seems that some people put on and some loose, dont know if different chemos have different effects.  With FEC I seemed to eat constantly and put on about 2 1/2 kilos over the 3 doses.  Now Docetaxel where I can't taste anything and so food has no joy anymore..

We will get through it and feel normal again
