Waiting rooms and passing the time

We spend a lot of time in waiting rooms.

I don't mind. I know the reason my doctors are always running late; they've had someone in there that really needed a bit of extra time, or they had an urgent case where someone needed to take priority over me.

It's inevitable.

And sometimes, I've been the person making everyone else late.

Recently a friend posted this great video with instructions for making little nests for wildlife that have been rescued. They're wonderful for baby birds, tiny baby marsupials like wombats and possums and just about any small animal. They are made using two strands of 8 ply acrylic so that they are nice and firm. This is my new favourite waiting room activity.

These are also a great hospital activity, or something to do on those days when you can't get off the couch. I recently had to take the train for an hour and a half to get to an appointment and I made three of these on each leg of the journey. They are quite relaxing to construct, almost like a meditation.

Contact your local wildlife rescue service to donate your nests, or simply mail them to any Wildlife ARC or WIRES group.

  • That's the beauty of wildlife care.  You get a baby animal for a while and then it has to go back to the wild and you get another one!!  I did it for years and loved it. :)

  • If I crochet a nest do they send me a baby animal and I get to keep it? :)

what a great idea! Thanks for sharing.

Fantastic ! Makes a change from BYOB - bring your own book LOL ????

  • What a great idea!  I usually just sit and twiddle my fingers, I'm very good at zenning out in waiting rooms.  My longest wait for a doctor was 2 hours, I just sat.

    cheers
