Vagina problems - the saga continues!

So I haven't been on here much, but a while ago I posted telling of my stupidly over-the-top regime of vaginal moisturisers. Since then I was diagnosed with Candida (non-albicans species) and I was put onto vaginal boric acid capsules. That was successful, mostly, but the thrush came back multiple times after completing the courses. I started seeing a naturopath, I'm waiting for an appointment with an Infectious Diseases doctor and today I saw a dermatologist specialising in vulva and vagina skin, and I thought I'd share my experience.

She was fabulous! I told her the whole sorry tale from the start of diagnosis and she listened and understood what I was saying and was sympathetic. She had a look (I warned her it was a good day so she might not see much) and she diagnosed me with ecsema and vulvovestibulitis as well as the thrush. She took a swab to culture, but said it's really only for interest as the treatment won't change. I have two types of cortisone and I have to see a physio for the vulvovestibulitis. She also said I need to use emulsifying ointment before my showers as a moisturiser.

So the moral of the story here is, if you have ongoing vaginal problems, get a referral to a vulva/vagina dermatologist if you can! I'll be telling my oncologist about this for the benefit of his other breast cancer patients (and other women's cancers). She said when she started about 10 years ago there was only 4 of them, but there's at least 10 now. Not sure if she meant just in Melbourne or the whole of Aus - hopefully just Melbourne! I had to wait quite a while for the appointment, and I nearly cancelled it, but thankfully my lovely husband and mother persuaded me to go. Best medical experience in a while!

  • Hi Purplehazelnut - just wondering how you're going with all this? Can you give us an update - I'm sure a lot of ladies are following your experiences on this this. Best wishes, Pam

  • There's a great information sheet here, everyone. I'm horrified to read some of the stories from sufferers on this site - Vulval Pain Society - some of them have had it their whole life and never had comfortable intercourse. Nightmare. Thankfully mine is fairly mild and I'm hoping I'll get it sorted out fairly quickly.

    Information Sheet - Vulvodynia

  • Actually it's vulvar vestibulitis and the physio I normally see hadn't heard of it, but she knew the term vulvodynia. I was checking with her about the referral that the dermatologist gave me and she and the other physio (who was also in my pilates class) just simply raved about the clinic I've been referred to. I think this vulvodynia is probably more common than we realise. Here's a Wikipedia link on it  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vulvar_vestibulitis

  • I had to google also Pam!  Very interesting.

    Paula :)

  • Thanks very much for passing this on Purplehazlenut. I'm going to have to Google vulvovestibulitis because I'm not sure what it means. But if there's treatment for it via a physio, that's brilliant! Best wishes, Pam xx

  • Well that certainly is very interesting indeed. Lucky you went for the appointment. What did she think the prognosis is for you? I have definite chemo induced menopause. My cancer was triple negative and I have finally started using ovestin cream and am slowly seeing some changes. I have been tested for thrush and definately don't have that.

There are others on the page that will definately be interested to read about your case. I live in Cairns and don't think there would be anyone with that specialty here.

I will watch with interest to see how you go. Thanks for sharing.
