Today is the day

Today is the day I have deceided to be in control and I'm having my hair cut into a short funky hairstyle in preperation for my hair falling out once I start chemo in 2 weeks!

My thought was it wont be so bad losing my hair from short than from long as I've got long very think hair!

I know there is a small percent chance that I wont lose my hair but I'm thinking it'll be nice and cool through the summer anyway!

Wish me luck :-)

  • I agree, I had long thick hair and before my mastecomy had it cut short thinking it would be easier to handle...then I ended up having chemo so the funky hair do only lasted a few weeks, but the hair everywhere drove me mad and my hubby shaved my head in the shed...both of us shed a few tears, him more than me:)

But bonus was I could buy a new hat each chemo and I was suddenly ready to go out in no time.

    good luck.

    Hi Toni,

I just wanted to jump in and say welcome to the online network. You seem to be finding your way around and getting some great support - but just shout if you need a hand.

It is great to hear that you are going to take control and cut your hair short -- There are so many women who have done this and not looked back.

You might like to see a couple of examples of discussions on the head shave if that helps:

I waited until a bit dropped - my hair is incredibly fine so it didn't take long to look like crap !! Then I cut it really short, #2 clippers. When I went to get my wig customised the hairdresser clipped right down to a #1. It has stayed like that, a fine fuzz, so it's quite nice. Love showers !!!!  And just being able to put your "hair" on without worrying about whther you need to wash it or get it cut - it's great. I love my hats too, I am collecting quite a set. And it's true !! You pick your clothes depending on which hat you want to wear !!!! Love it !! My youngest son told me I should keep wearing them after my hair grows cos I look fabulous in hats - what a sweetie !

It's only for a while. It will grow back. It's all part of the process.

Have fun - much love and good positive vibes.

  • YES, I just had that discovery tonight...head first, then the rest. And yes, a pirate...it is is hilarious what we think about in this situation. Yesterday I was thinking pirate, but the comments were more Joan Collins ( scarf with big glasses). I've also thought nun while trying a black scarf. Kinda fun if you're in the right mood. I dunno......today I went nude (head)...so nice....then just a simple bandana. I must be getting used to the new look. I can feel a party coming on......theme is anything that is characterized by a head scarf. Lots of good tips L:)
  • At first it can be quite hard co ordinating clothes and headgear. Now the trick is to start with what you are going to wear on your head - the weather and the venue will determine that. Soon you realize you need LOTS of head stuff! Then you work your way down to your shoes. Now it only takes a slight error and you could end up looking like a gypsy,a pirate, a washer woman or a bikie chick.- not that these are wrong if that's the look you want. When my hair got to buzz cut stage,I folded my bandanas to form head bands cos of the summer heat. I thought it was a good look until my 8yr old nephew asked me if I was learning karate.Kids are soooo honest. Good luck.

  • Funny thing....I have much faster showers BUT take ages trying to decide which head covering to wear, style, color, texture. I think I need new clothes to go with all my new scarves and wraps! L:)
  • Hi Toni, the best way to face all of this seems to be in a playfull positive way. I'm quite enjoying being a skin head today. Just at home, but it feels really nice and even a bit liberating. Go the funky short cut. I just couldn't let mine go at all until it had decided. Then we whipped it off clean. Good luck Cheers Louie
