The Waiting Game

Had my lump/sentinal node out on Tuesday, now just a waiting game for the results.  Not too much pain so that is good just a little uncomfortable sleeping with not knowing what to do with my arm lol.  Hospital staff were wonderful but glad to get home as not much sleep to be had there.

  • Hi All

Just had surgery on the 11/3 -  lumpectomy and axillary dissection of all lymph nodes on left side. Still getting used to sensations up and down arm after having drain removed. Nice shade of bruising as well.

Get results on Wednesday so bit anxious but staying positive. Could not fault the whole surgery and all pre op to post op medical team.

Have accepted that chemo is on the cards but will cross that bridge when I need to. So as a newbie I may have a few more posts coming.

    Stay strong everyone

  • Hi Angie,

I had my Lump/sentinel node procedure 2 days ago. I will be going for my Pathology results next week too so the nerves are there abit. But the medical staff were wonderful and I have great family and friends around me. It all helps with it all. Since the procedure I have been following the exercises that we have todo so I am focused on that and although I am a little sore and uncomfortable I have not needed to take any painkillers or Panadol. No drains needed either.

    Take Care

  • The waiting game is always the worst, I was told to keep busy, but that is easier said that done... I'm glad things went well for you & I am keeping my fingers crossed that your results come back all good for you:) I didn't have drains either & like you not sure why I didn't.. That little under arm cushion you should ask your breast care nurse for one.. Mine came in very handy as I ended up with a bad staph infection...I also had a lumpectomy to remove 2 tumours & have just recently finished radiation.... Rest up & good luck..take care Christine:)x
  • I must not be that special lol, I didn't get a little cushion :-)

I remember sitting outside radiology waiting to get the wire put in and the elderly lady who went in before me crying out in pain and shreeking!  I thought "oh shit, what am I in for"?

So I'm lying there thinking the worst, especially when the radiology said "the four dye needles is going to sting a lot", but in reality there was a little discomfort but no real pain - thankfully.  Turns out that the lady before had a REAL fear of needles (poor thing).

I'm glad to report that the whole day really wasn't too bad in terms of pain.

  • I expected to wake up with drains (because I was told I would) but there wasn't any..... not sure why.  But yes I would imagine they would add to your discomfort.

  • I had my lympth nodes done yesterday little uncomfortable did u get the drain? I've got that very annoying hopefully the results are good for u
  • Hi Angie

The waiting is the worst part and I am learning that the anticiaption of every new thing we go through  is always worse than the actual participation.  As Tonya said, try to stay distracted as much as possible and don't take your worries to the bedroom when you go to bed.  Easier said than done but with practice and thinking of some other nice place that makes you feel safe works well.

    Sending love and hugs.

    Joy xx
