I'm sorry you too are finding it difficult to get good treatment. I had to wait several weeks to get treatment at the Chermside Clinic but found exercising helpfu, particularly if you can find a heated pool, and it is ok ( with any other treatment you maybe having) to use this. Just walking in water that goes up over your arm and chest is good or water aerobics if available.
All lymphoedema therapists (but it seems they are not) should be trained in bandaging as this works to actually move the fluid if it is still soft. The clinic where I went also had a pump. It was a bit like a giant blood pressure cuff that your whole arm went in. It then progressively applied pressure in waves up your arm to move the fluid out of the fingers and arm. It was very effective and relaxing to have on.
In my experience you can be taught how to help yourself. I can now do effective self massage, know what exercise works best, know when to wear my sleeve (high risk activities) and can bandage myself to move any small build-ups of fluid (overnight can be enough). I went for my first review appointment yesterday and all is good with my arm. It had actually gone down further in size in two places, stayed the same in the others and increased very slightly near the top of my arm. I now know to concentrate on this area a bit more. I go back in a month and will see the doctor, OT (to check my garment still fits well in case I need it) and nurse. I really hope that you find the Cancer Council Clinic more helpful. Keeping my fingers crossed for you. Take care. Deanne xxx
PS On my previous post about lymphoedema I put up some info about deep breathing. This stimulates the lymph system and can help move excess fluid build-up. Just doing this 5 times a day can make a difference.
