Tamoxifen

Hi all you lovely pink sisters,

Just an update on tamoxifen and any side effects. It is now 1 week since I began taking the tablets and so far so good. The only thing I have found is my legs are quite stiff and achey and my ankles tend to swell up - fluid retention.

Walking helps with this a lot. I try and walk 55 mins each day but the heat has made it hard sometimes.  Apart from these there have been no other effects but I know it is early days.

I start my 7 weeks radiotherapy next Tuesday and then my 3 weekly herceptin on Friday. A bit of a juggling act once I go back to work but I'll get there.

The school holidays have dragged a little so I am looking to going back and being busy again.

Take care and stay as well as can be expected. thinking of you all often.

  • Firstly great so hear of another Perth-ite on this site!  I'm having my radiotherapy at Sir Charles Gardiner and my herceptin ( and chemo) at St John of God, Subi! Charlies is also going through renovations! A nightmare! I start next Tues. It's like a rabbit warren.  I agree about the weather. Having hot flushes/sweats couldn't have come at a worse time! I usually cope quite well with the Perth heat. I finding it very draining.

Good luck with your journey and keep in touch

  • Thanks for your reply! Yes I'm not sure the above mentioned side effects are the tamoxifen or not but I suspect so. You are describing exactly what I have so maybe the Tamoxifen is the culprit.

    Good luck with your journey,

  • Thanks for you reply. Good to know there are others going through the same thing. The side effects at the moment are bearable. I thnk the aching legs are the worst. Feel like an old woman! Getting motivated to go  for a walk can be a challenge.  the weight will slowly creep on if I don't keep on top of it. I also took the first tablet (1/2 actually!) with a great deal of fear. But so far so good too.

    Good luck to you too,

    Alison xx

  • Thanks for your kind comments Tonya! Yep I know I will be fine but it is also good to know that others have the same issues with these drugs.

Thanks for well wishes. I just want to get it over and done with!

Good luck to you as well

    Love Alison xxx

  • Hi Al, good to hear the Tamoxifen is so far agreeing with you, fingers crossed. I think the hot flushes took several weeks to come into full force with me and as Tonya said the aching  joints and swelling do seem to settle down with time even though they react every now and then just to remind you they are their i think.

The weather in Perth  the this summer has been really disgusting, The high humidity is really hard to handle with these Hot flushes and Hot sweats.  It's really horrible isn't it .  Where are you having your Radiation treatment? I had mine at RPH  and hopefully they have finished the renovations and have installed the new machines by the time you go if you are going there.

Best wishes and let us know how  you get on. Even though you will breeze through it. Just time consuming and tiring but you will be fine. Cheers Jo xx

  • Hi Ladies I started tamoxifen on dec 1 and I am doing ok. I get the hot flushes and don't cope we'll at all with really hot weather. I also get anxiety, poor sleep and sore legs occasionally but I don't know if that's because of the tamoxifen or chemo or surgery or a combination of the whole bc thing??? Ann-Marie xx

  • Forgot to mention the hot flushes! Occasional ones but so far they aren't too bad! The Perth heat doesn't help as I'm not sure whether it's a hot flush or the heat!!

    Keep you posted!
