Tamoxifen

Hello Ladies,

I've been told I'll be going into Tamoxifen by my oncologist.

What have been your experiences?

  • I have been on tamoxifen about 4 and half years and I really don't think I can attribute any side effects to it. I did get hot flushes initially but they were no doubt due to chemo putting me into early menopause ie I expect I would have had them even without tamoxifen. I have opted to stay on it - with oncologists approval - despite being nearly 5 years post menopause because I have not had any problems with it. The side effects from aromatase inhibitors sound much worse to me. Personally I think it is a better option (for me anyway) because it allows you to retain your circulating estrogen (reduced though it is anyway due to menopause) which is better for your bones and sexual health. Having said all that, I am curious to see whether I will feel any different - better? - when I stop taking it early next year.
  • Yep - had my review today and Tamoxifen is the main culprit!  Fatigue drives me nutty and is attributed to where I have been, what I have been through and my medication called Tamoxifen!  It just takes one very very long time for the body to adjust and be happy with where it is at !  Bring on a holiday, that should fix some things!!
  • I am on Tamoxifen because my oncologist says I have to be. He will not allow me to go off them. If I could I would chuck them to hell in the bin. I am one of those who seems to get every side effect going. You get used to the sweats. I take magnesium and D3 daily for the bone aches. I sleep a lot.
  • @KatherineH Hello! there is a number of threads on Tamoxifen it you put that into the search bar you can bring up all previous conversations. There was one as recent as 15/9. I was on Tamoxifen for 4yrs pre menopause, zero side effects, however I had a recurrence at the 4yr mark same spot, same breast even after radiation. Post the latest treatment have had more side effects with Arimidex and Aromasin, however the side effects moreso has been from chemo and menopause, the AI just adds to the mix, but honestly, it's just annoying I find than debilitating now. Hugs Melinda xo
