Your doctor is the best person to assess your situation and recommend what is best but even people who have had mastectomies can still be at risk of breast cancer recurring or a new tumor beginning in the slight amount of remaining tissue, muscle or skin of the breast. There is also the risk of a cell or two making their way through the blood stream or lymph system to somewhere else in the body. Tamoxifen can reduce the risk of either of these things happening. Risks are different depending on your particular situation. If you are concerned talk it over with your doctor. It is always good to understand why a particular treatment is recommended for us.
