Tamoxifen - when did your side effects start?

Hiya there :) Just curious as to when everyone's side effects began after starting tamoxifen? I'm one month in, and cautiously waking each day expecting the worst to begin! x

  • Was about 4-5 weeks for me, I was already having hot flushes but they just ramped up to thermo-nuclear.  Started the meds in Qld summer which probably didn’t help haha.  Good luck hopefully you will sail through
  • Side effects started creeping in around 4wks for me and then just got worse.I had to take another med to counteract it’s side effects. I lasted about 4 years on Tamoxifen and then it affected my liver so I stopped it.
  • My doctor said you'll know around 6wks.  Almost to the day the whole list pretty much kicked in at once.  Grrr.....
Hopefully you cruise on through.  A lot of pepople do.
  • I've never done Tamoxifen as I went straight on to Letrozole but my advice for what it's worth is to assume that you will be fine - worry about side effects if and when they happen.
  • Hi @CatRM I also was on it for 4yrs and zero side effects, I was pre-menopausal, whether that has something to do with it who knows. I did however have a recurrence at 4yrs, so onto Arimidex after Chemo I went and now Aromasin. Doing the rounds LOL, have to laugh...my last stop I will ask for Letrozole as its a non steroidal medication unlike Aromasin. xx
  • I tolerated Tamoxifen quite well for four years. My only issues were constant fatigue and thickening endometrium and polyps. As i have had three hysteroscopies in four years, I have now been swapped to Arimidex. No real issues yet..a few headaches and the ever present fatigue.  Good luck, hope ypu have minimal issues xx
  • I had zero side effects from Tamoxifen. I was on it for 5 years and had no problems at all.

In hind sight, the fact it didn't stop my periods should have been given some consideration, but for the rest, Nada. No issues.
  • Hi @CatRM,
I am 6 weeks into my second run of Tamoxifen. I was on it straight after treatment for 2 years before having ovaries removed and changing to Letrozole for just over 3 years. When my body started to really struggle on Letrozole, my onc changed me back to Tamoxifen.

I never had any major side effects on Tamoxifen the first time and so far so good with it this time too. We are all different and for me it seems my body tolerates Tamoxifen quite well. I am hoping that I can stay on Tamoxifen for another 4 1/2 years to get to the 10 year mark for anti-hormone therapy.

I hope you continue to find your body is ok on Tamoxifen too. Take care.
  • Yay!  Maybe you are one of the lucky ones as there are some out there who do not suffer the side effects!
    Good work!
    Take care
