Swollen legs and feet after chemo finished. Not sure who I should be asking about this

hi Ladies, I am sure this has been covered before, but I can't find it in a search.
During Docetaxol my legs began to swell after each dose and on the last one, they swelled very badly about 5 days after the last dose. The Onc has given me Lasix to take, it worked the first day, and then I had a week of normal, but now, three weeks after the last dose both legs and feet are constantly swollen, doesn't seem to matter what time of day, even when I first get up in the morning.
Walking isn't helping and the Lasix doesn't seem to be making any change.
Not sure who I should be asking about this, I am dead scared they will stay this way.
Should I be doing anything to make the swelling go down?

  • Glad you got it checked out and hopefully things will improve soon.
  • Great to hear you have seen the GP. Fingers crossed the bigger dose of oasis works for you. Try and remember to put your feet up every time you sit down. It will certainly help. I have been taking oasis for 18 months now but mine is due to heart problems. I always sit with my feet up whenever I'm watching to etc and it makes a big difference. Stay well xx
  • Unicornkisses, what a relief to have a bit of reassurance. These treatments sure put our bodies through the wringer.
  • I saw the GP today, she was a bit concerned about it and has increased my Lasix from 20mg to 40mg after conferring with the pharmasist too about the dose.
She was happy that there was no heat, rash or evidence of blood clots, so that was reassuring.
She wanted me to have a blood test, which I was having today anyway, especially for the kidney function.
She also told me to put my feet up more, which I haven't been doing, so will try to do more of that.
I see the Onc on Monday and will run it past him too, hope it has improved by then though.
At least I have a bit of peace of mind now having seen the GP and being checked out.
Thank you for the push, @primek it was what I needed to make a decision to get it checked out.
I would have spoken to the breast care nurse otherwise though, but she doesn't work Mondays.
I know I don't ask my nurse enough @iserbrown and should check in more often.
  • Just wanted to come on and say pleased to see that you're heading to the GP.  Good advice given by others.  At first I was a little unsure if I needed to speak with the Breast care nurse; knowing how many other patients that I felt were more urgent than I that needed her attention however, when I finally did ring her the first thing she said was never hesitate that is what we are here for.  She has been a blessing
Good luck with your blood tests and sorting out the swollen legs!
    Take care
  • Thank you, will get onto the GP this morning. Seeing the Onc next Monday. Bloodtests due today, so will have them this afternoon.
  • If you can't get into your oncologist get to your GP just be sure it's not some other complication. It could just be an imbalance in your bloods, but could be kidney or heart issues too. I certainly had fluid retention on taxol, but definetly get this checked out to be sure and asap . Some TED stockings might help to push fluid up the leg. You should be able to get from a chemist.
  • Unicornkisses, that sounds horrible you have to put up with that. Can you ask your breast care nurse maybe. Someone should be able to help you surely.
I hope the swelling goes soon for you.
