surgery thoughts

hi all

Im having a mastectomy on 15th august at the royal adelaide hospital. Im thinking it should go ok as i will be asleep of course.

How did your surgeries go? is there anything I need to be aware of before i go in or after??

the recovery will be hard i know that but im trying to be positive that it wont hold me back too much.

Have seen a few youtube videos around that have inspiring stories of survivors and those who are younger than me going through chemo and such. family and friends have been praying for me since i found out which has eased my mind a bit.

    Thank you for the positive comments Kathy and also for the reminder about Lance Armstrong's book which I've read previously but should and will revisit. I also like the sound of the others you mentionned so might go visiting the library (or see if I can download in electronic form!).

    I continue to be amazed and guided by your approach and resilience - and hope to live by a similar motto.

    hi dette, great post; you explained things very well i thought. i read lance armstrong's " it's not about the bike,  " when i had my treatment and a few others. shane goulds " tumble turns" is another, although not about cancer.

     yes taking a little control over what is happening does help a bit. being informed as much as possible helped me. i had a few upsets along the way, but ultimately it helped me  " grow " too.

    although BC is still in the back of my mind, and i wonder if / when it might come back or something else might come along, i do try and get on with life now, and not worry too much about it. i try and deal with what is happening now, and living day to day. not always easy i know.

    careful on those icy roads.

    hi there, don't know if I speak for everyone, but my anaethetist told me before my mastectomy that 'at least it's not too painful because it mainly involves fatty tissue', and much to my relief, he was right!! I had a mastectomy with axillary clearance, and was in very little pain- I think I had nothing stronger than panadol. Getting my arm moving again was a different story, but I found the more I did with it, the easier it became to move- as tedious as they are, be sure to do the arm exercises the physio gives you. Hope all goes well with your surgery.
