Surgeon visit

So today was my surgeon visit 2 wks after surgery the news isn't what we wanted to hear. I was told that the margins were what they wanted so he needs to talk to oncologist to discuss whether we do chemo and or mastectomy. So many mixed emotions today don't which way to go

  • It's good to hear other stories, I have always said that if this happened to me I would have a double mastectomy as I don't see the point of having just one my kid days are over I only have an a cup so not much there anyway lol, I have spoken to my bcn and she has been helpful in saying that I am the only one that can make that choice , my mum had a mastectomy n I seriously couldn't b bothered to cart a fake boob around lol, what is the tissue expander u were talking about meg and I don't think reconstruction will b an option for me due to money situation thanks for the input I do appreciate it Lee

  • So sorry you have this extra worry. Your doctor will have all your information so will be able to give you your best options for you to choose from, but I can share my experience which is that I had my lumpectomy and axillary clearance just before Christmas before going straight into chemo. My margins weren't clear so I have opted for mastectomy which I will have after chemo finishes and then I'll continue with radiotherapy. I felt that I was covering all my bases by having the mastectomy, since I had lymph node involvement anyway. I have been planning on reconstruction, so will have a tissue expander in with my surgery.

So I'm sorry you have to deal with this extra burden and hope that your next appointment gives you all you need. It's a real rollercoaster at times. At the start I didn't expect the need for extra surgery, but I was fortunate to share a ward with a lovely lady having a second go at getting clearer margins, so I knew what was possible before seeing my surgeon afterwards.

Good luck and all the best from me too! Cheers, Meg :)

  • Try not to worry although I know it's almost impossible.I think it's always best to be guided by your doctor,if you feel confident in them.We all have different results, but only your own doctor knows YOUR results precisely. This journey is so up and down, that's why it's often referred to as a roller coaster.Remember though, that these days,no matter what treatment you need,BC is usually very treatable .I had a mastectomy, then chemo, now Tamoxifen, and I feel pretty good:)All the best with whatever you need, and stay on here for support and advice from others that have already been there and are doing great :) xoxRobyn
