sore still after lumpectomy

Hi everyone, just need some views on how long your boob is sore and tender  after you have had a  lumpectomy. It's been three weeks nearly and i have a  red rash over half my boob (not near operation site) which feels like a burn and  still have  tenderness and jabbing into nipple area that is requiring medication to help ease it. Is this normal  and how long does this last for. My Doctor said he does not know ???????

Cheers Jo

  • Sorry to hear about all that pain Jo.It's good you were proactive and hopefully it will be resolved soon.Yes,we move next Wednesday and can't wait.We are all getting along well here but I'm getting sick of this blow up mattress!

  • Good to know it should all be starting to  heal soon from lumpectomy.          I  phoned the Breast clinic today and they got me in straight away which was good. I saw one of the surgeons and he said it may be infection from the inside but wants me to see the onc tomorrow and get their opinion.  They took photos and will re-assess in early next week. Apparently no treatment will begin until they find out what is causing the inflammation and all the pain is gone.  They don't think it is related to that radioactive seed thingy as it is not in my boob now.

Hope everything is still going good at your daughter and partners place. Nearly time to move on and start all over again. Good luck

    Cheers Jo xx

  • It took about 4 or 5 weeks to settle down when I had a lumpectomy. But because you've had radio seeds put in I would tell your onc.You may have some burning on the inside going on rather than allergy.

  • Thanks for replying Rach, it sounds as though what i still have is normal, as you had it to. I see the oncologist this Wednesday so i might discuss it with him.I really don't wont radiation on top of it while it is so sore.

I was just worried that because i had the radioactive seeds put in my boob that i may have been allergic to them as it feels like i have been burnt. Onc will know hey?

Thanks again and good luck with next round of IVF. Everything will workout for the best. you will see.

  • Hi Jo,

I had a tender boob for about 5 weeks, with a slight red rash you mentioned which was above and below nipple.  My nipple was tender (pins and needle feeling) as well as quite hard on the scar side which probably was due to the tissue healing.  I had to have more surgery last week, so back to drawing board with my pain/swelling etc....

Maybe call up your Breast Care Nurse and explain all that is happening, she may have some ideas on how to help.   Maybe light touching the area to get the nerve ending fired up again, I was told to do this to help the pain (jabbing pins and needles) in my arm after this surgery which is slowly helping.

Hope it gets better for you soon, it has only been 3 weeks which isn't that long, maybe your body is just taking it's sweet ass time to heal and there is nothing to stress about....  :o)

    Take Care.
