That's great that you had the right info given to you before making a decision but I think many women, their families and friends may not realize this when faced with the shock of diagnosis. I feel we owe it to ourselves and all the women who face this awful situation to be clear about the difference and maybe save someone some heartache.
I realize that for some women there are other reasons other than the risk of a new cancer that result in them choosing to have a double but for me this was the deciding factor. I was more at risk from a recurrence and have chosen to reduce my risk by changing my lifestyle and continuing to take Tamoxifen. Tamoxifen also reduces my chance of any new hormone positive cancer as well as any recurrence. Lifestyle changes not only reduce my chance of a recurrence or new breast cancer but also reduce my chance of other chronic diseases.
There are lots of things to consider and we are all different but our actions and explanations can impact others. Fear is a powerful emotion and I am sure I am not the only person who felt scared about the possibility of getting breast cancer in their other breast because of reading about other people's situations. If I can save someone else from this worry or at least prompt them to ask the questions about what their risk maybe then that's good.
Take care. Deanne xxx
