Should I question it?
Last month I had my one year since diagnosis mammogram and check up with a surgeon substitute. He has booked me in for another six monthly check as that will be one year from mastectomy. So far so good. However, he booked me for an ultrasound as well. Not a mammogram and he didn’t say whether it is for the mx side or boob side. This takes place after my appt with the surgeon.
My questions are : Do they do an ultrasound instead of a mammogram to change things up or will the ultrasound be for the mx side? And Does it make since to anyone that the ultrasound is after my surgeon appt?
This surgeon substitute didn’t even know he was supposed to check my mx site until I told him and then he only did a cursory check so I am a bit concerned he might have got these other things messed up.
Should I ask my cranky BC nurse about it or just leave things as they are and let them deal with their own stuff ups?

- @Blossom1961 I am guessing it WAS about the 'extra rays' ..... but in the longevity of things - I wonder how much damage one Mammogram would be, compared to the benefit of finding tumours .....
It Definitely sounds stupid to have the Ultrasound done after seeing the specialist ..... yep - well worth trying to get that date changed so your specialist/surgeon will see the results before you see them. - My surgeon just palpates my abdomen to make sure my liver isn’t enlarged- no scans.
My GP usually orders a yearly blood check.One year my liver enzymes were slightly elevated and she sent me for a liver ultrasound which showed a fatty liver but no cancer(yay) - Hi @TonyaM just wondering what scans you have for your abdomen and liver. Is this also done by ultrasound.
My first year ones are due at the end of June. xo - Hi Blossom1961, I’ve been doing this for 16yrs now.Every year I have a mammogram followed by an ultrasound on my remaining breast.The technician also runs the ultrasound over my armpit and mastectomy scar.I usually pick the films and report up the next day and then go see my breast surgeon a few weeks later.She looks at the films and checks my breast,chest, armpits,abdomen/liver.She then writes an X-ray form for next year and says’see you then’.I go to a private radiology centre but don’t pay anything.Perhaps you could talk to your GP who can organize mammo and ultrasound together? It doesn’t make sense to see the surgeon before you have the ultrasound.
- @Blossom1961 I understand you. I have a cranky BCN too. But always ask. I've had to do so much self-advocacy and self- case management. I had my one-year scan a year after surgery. They did 3D mammogram on my remaining breast and ultrasound on it and on the chest wall and armpit of my mastectomy side.
- You could always pull a swifty @Blossom1961. Just ring the radiology place, tell them you can't make it that day and pull it a week forward so your surgeon will have the results when you go for your appointment. You can ask them what's written on the referal at the same time. Problem solved and no need to talk to cranky BCN.
- @Zoffiel I think I will just text my BCN. I haven’t had contact with her since I told her she didn’t listen and just made assumptions. I have been hesitant to contact her since. I know, I am a chicken but as I was so frustrated with her at the time and in a lot of pain, I let my feelings be known rather clearly. She has been a cranky pants since the start so I don’t imagine I have improved matters.

- @kitkatb Endoscopy procedures are great. I was under so no chance of gagging and you get to have a lovely sleep. Take some werthers with you as your throat MAY feel scratchy afterwards. If I had a favourite procedure, this would be it. Will yours be done whilst you are consciously aware or, like me, out of it?
- @blossum I have got my first one coming up at the end of June. I went through the public system and they have dates for my U/S and Mammogram exactly one week before I see surgeon so they can go through results with me. Also the breast care nurse will sit with me while seeing surgeon to explain things if I don't understand anything. She always does, then takes me aside after to have a chat about it all and any concerns I might have.
Seems a bit odd having seen the surgeon/ registrar before the scans. Sounds like you have drawn the short straw with a cranky BC nurse. I hope everything goes okay and definitely proactive is the way to go.
I've got an endoscopy booked at the end of this week a bit concerned about as never had one done before. ( I gag even taking tablets. )
