RT and fatigue

I'm wondering whether other people found that radiotherapy made them tired. I am about three quarters through my 30 zappings and starting to feel quite tired despite sleeping well and eating healthily. It's not anywhere near as bad as chemo but I had been feeling really good for a while and now my energy seems to be ebbing away again. If it is RT, how long do people find it takes to get back to normal afterwards? (Assuming I can back to "normal" on the dreaded tamoxifen.)

  • Ah yes, well I guess I knew I would get tired but I felt so good in the beginning that I was just hoping I wouldn't. Breast cancer is like a ride you can't get off isn't it. (that analogy actually makes more sense to me than the journey one). Been riding high for a little bit after the dark chemo tunnel, now I'm on a downward slope again.  I find it so frustrating when I don't have the energy to do things - I've put off doing the shopping for three days this week as I just couldn't summon the energy. And now here I am at 4am not able to sleep.  Thanks all of you for the advice and support. It does help to know I'm not the only one going through this. Perhaps I will ignore the messy house today and get myself a copy of that book Helen. Hope you are all travelling okay on your "rides". Janet

  • Hi darl

Wondered how long it would take before you started to really "feel" the rads....sorry it's kicking in and you're really tired.

Like these gorgeous ladies have said - it is normal and nothing to be worried about....just try to cope the best way possible - like Tonya said - take a nanna nap (although maybe not in Coles Adean!) and go with it how you're feeling (well said Mich).

When I worked in radiotherapy I could see how the fatigue would start to hit towards the end of the treatments....but people did get through it.

Don't overtax yourself, say 'no' to things when you're tired, go to bed early - you might not sleep..but perhaps get a nice girly mag like Marie Clare or Cosmo, and read that or better still try a book (if you can concentrate) like 50 Shades of Grey!!!   Not too much concentration required for that one I assure you - more like visualisation!  hehehe!

Whatever works for you...just do it.  You're nearly there and we're all travelling along with you.

    luv H

  • HI,

Im on my 20th zap today with 10 more to go ,Im starting to feel tired but its weird like it will hit me while Im doing groceries and I think do they allow you to lay down in Coles? No I dont think so . I will get home and just want to sleep a bit and then I m fine. I do go to bed early not necesarliy to sleep but maybe rest, lots of yawning in the morning, but not a single burn a little itchy rash which goes away with cortisone cream. One lady I know was exhausted on her 2nd week but we are all different, The breast nuse said to me today said its like being on a ride you dont like but you cant get of yet. love it And you know the Tamoxifen may not be so bad , and normal we may never be , but at least we are here blogging.

                                                                                         Regards adean
