Root canal link with breast cancer

Hi girlies. Know this sounds ludicrous but a friend of mine sent me an interesting articles. The jist of it is that there is a link between breast cancer and root canal treatment. I wont try to explain the science but have left the link below for your perusal. I wouldn't say I'm cynical at such articles but take I take a fairly measured approach. After all if there was truth in this why would still get offered the treatment. Nevertheless I found it an interesting read. I have had root canal treatment but so have many of my friends and family are cancer free. Just wondering how many of you had root canal treatment? (although I'm sure many of you have). Again I want to reiterate that I don't fully believe in this theory. It just makes you think. Xx http://www.realfarmacy.com/97-of-terminal-cancer-patients-previously-had-this-dental-procedure/

  • Hi Gilliann,

Cancer Australia - the peak national Australian cancer control agency - doesn't recognise root canal as a risk factor for developing breast cancer, most likely because of a lack of good quality clinical evidence.

Have you heard of the iHeard website - www.iheard.com.au?

It's run by the Cancer Council and is dedicated to busting cancer-related myths. People can submit questions, and the Cancer Council will post responses based on the latest good quality evidence. You may find the question about root canal and breast cancer on the website already, or if not.... why not post the question yourself? I'm sure there are other people out there who are wondering about the same thing.

    Good luck

  • Very interesting!! I have never heard this before.  I have just passed my 5 years since I was diagnosed with BC. I had a root canal done early this year.  I certainly hope BC doesn't return.

  • Wow this is very interesting, I have had root canal treatment......although I know a lot of people who have had root canal work and are in perfect health. It's one of those things we will never really know, I was told by my Breast Care Nurse that breast cancer tumours have been found in egyptian mummies.

    Food for thought

  • Firstly, I have not had root canal treatment, so this did not contribute to my BC. However, I had been told by doctors that there are definitely concerns about the health impact of root canal treatment. There are a number of dentists who do not perform root canal because of their research into the health problems associated with it. I would personally never have it because of the doubt surrounding it. There are enough risks we take in life, this one can be avoided. Interesting article and it does make you think. Hope you are feeling better. Take care. Deanne xxx
