Hi. I thought I would share my reconstruction experience. I recently underwent a bilateral mastectomy and immediate reconstruction using implants. The intent was to spare my right nipple. Two days after my original July 2013 operation, I went back into surgery to have a blood clot removed. Approx two weeks after my original surgery, I needed to have my right nipple removed and additional dead skin removed. Week after this surgery, I started feeling feverish and experienced leaking from my newly constructed left breast. I had two more operations in the same month to be flushed with antibiotics to fight the infection and to this date remain on antibiotics. Subsequent to the 5 operations, my breast skin tissue became so thin that its ability to heal became tenuous and only two days ago, I had my implants removed. Ten weeks on from where I started and 6 operations down, i have no breasts. Furthermore, my skin is now so thin i need to consider a DIEP Or TDAP. So my experience has been rough. However, I have been fortunate to have a very supportive plastic surgeon who is very caring and dedicated and takes the time to answer my repetitive questions patiently each time. regarding costs, I'm in top hospital cover and have had minimum direct out of pocket expenses (those that I have had, have been initial scans for diagnosis, antibiotic or anaethesist related and even the latter has been billed sparingly). It is worth talking to ur doctor about a plastic surgeon that specialises in breast reconstruction and asking about the costs upfront including out of pocket expenses. My plastic surgeon also encouraged me to research him, the options available to make an informed decision and recommend this website and
www.breast.com.au if you need or want more information to discuss reconstruction with response from surgeons. Good luck.
