REALLY heavy period!

Glad you "coped well" with the ultrasound.  My uterus always showed up that it was "full" of fibroids.  My gyne kept hoping that I would go through menopause and they would shrink.  I am now nearly 55 and my mum never went through menopause until 56 - after having 5 kids in 9 years.  I still don't know if I am through it - still some hormones hanging around.  Anyway whilst there is no bleeding I think I am through.  I'm sure all will be well with you and if it isn't - it is early diagnosis.  Keep  busy until you know for sure XLeonie

O poor darl,you must be so over it.You have been through enough and need  time out from all these tests.Well I suppose it's good news about the fibroids but a worry about the ovary.Don't you just love it when you go in to get one thing checked and they find an extra problem that you didn't know you had! I had a huge cyst removed from my ovary back in 2002.I was so worried but it was benign.Then the following year I found the breast lump and was so sure it would be a cyst, so didn't worry - got that one wrong!!.You just have to stay neutral Louise till you see your doc.Hey,we are getting good at that by now. I have to go for my mammogram in April.I can't believe a year has gone since I was diagnosed.Oh and what a fun year it was! I know I'll be sweating bullets before this mammo but on the upside there is only one boob to squash! Good luck for Friday.

Hi Girls,

As promised, an update after my scan.  I had the pelvic ultrasound yesterday afternoon - yep it was unusual Leonie!!  That condom on the machine was quite disconcerting LOL

I haven't been back to the doctor yet (Friday) to get the results but I asked the radiographer if everything was normal.  Apparently I have some fibroids in my uterus, one of which is distorting the edge and may be the cause of the excessive bleeding.  Just as I was walking out the door she said that I also have a small lesion on my left ovary!!  She said that it was probably nothing to worry about but with my history it sent up alarm bells.  Hopefully she is right and I guess I will find out on Friday when I see the doctor.

I have been researching having my ovaries removed but from what I have read it sounds like the risks are quite high.  It sounds like you have a much higher risk of cardiovascular diseases, osteoporosis and other things that I hadn't even thought about like Parkinson's disease and Dementia!!  Apparently if you have your ovaries removed before the age of 45 (I'm 43) then your risk of mortality increases by 170%!!  Very scary stuff!  There I was thinking that this may be an answer for all my worries but it seems like it is quite a big decision to make!

I'll wait til I speak to the doctor anyway and will probably fax a copy of the report to my surgeon as well to get his opinion....can't hurt to get a second opinion on these things!!  I am in the process of looking at genetic testing so if that shows that I carry the BRCA mutation then I might have to look at having the ovaries removed anyway......we will have to wait and see.

It just seems to be that one thing leads to another.  I just want to get on with life and forget about doctors for a while!!

I know how you feel Louise.You just get so over having tests and checkups.I keep putting off my pap smear and dental checkup cos I can't face anything more done to my body.Next month is my mammogram-can't believe that's here again.Probably be a cot case before that one! Good luck for Tuesday-it's bound to be all ok.

Thanks for the reassurance Lee!  I thought I was the only one there for a moment :)

Luckily mine seems to have eased right off now but I was worried while it was heavy as it didn't seem to be letting up at all.  Previously I would be heavy for a few days and then it would be not so bad for a few days and then not much at all for a few days - so maybe 5-6 days total?  This time I was REALLY heavy for about 5 days then just heavy for 1 day and today not too much at all.  Hopefully this is close to the end for this month!!

I have a friend who had the same procedure as you and she is soooo happy.  She doesn't get periods at all now and used to be really heavy too.

I go for my pelvic ultrasound on Tuesday so we will see what that shows.....although I'm not really expecting anything at all to show up.  I also have to go for a pap smear once everything has settled down.

I'm so sick of my body at the moment - I want a new one!!

I haven't read all the replies to your period post BUT...I went through a temporary manopause and then got my period back ...I can't remember how long after all the treatment. I had what I thought were heavy periods previously. Periods past my temporary menopause though have been RIDICULOUS. I know no-one else like this so it's refreshing to hear about you...and nice to be able to be here for you. My periods wre lasting for 15, 16 days, and were as regular as clockwork after some time had past. So, I was lucky to get 2 weeks free of bleeding each month! . I had dreadful clottting and cramps and would find it difficult to drive to school to do the 30 minute round trip to pick up my children! I'd have the biggest possible tampax AND a super-sizes pad and sometimes put on an extra pair of knickers!  I was also tired all the time and had ridiculously low feritin levels. My GP sent me to a haemotologist who put me on Cyklocapron tablets to try and slow the blood flow. 6 horse tablets a day(from day 1 till the period stopped)...on top of an anti-depressant and an iron tablet.. Apart from hating to rattle as I walked I didn't think the Cyklocapron tablets were all that effective. I tried them again after stopping them at one stage just to make sure I'd been doing the right thing but to no avail. So...last week I had an ENDOMETRIAL ABLATION. I'm not sure if you have had children or are still planning them. Obviously, if you still plan to have more then you can't have this procedure. It was day surgery, and was a routine, 20-25 minute procedure, including a D and C. I read that the actual EA only takes 90 seconds! A wand is inserted that pretty much microwaves the lining of the uterus. The outcome should be light to NO periods. I'm HOPING for the latter...I"VE DONE MY TIME!!!!! When I went in to surgery I was on DAY 16 of my period and it had only lightened up a few days earlier. As expected, I have bled lightly since then and today, 1 and a half weeks since the op I no longer even need a panty-liner. It was hardly even bleeding really. It will take a year or so to normalise but I'm looking forward to living life a bit more!!

I've been writing without even looking up half the time so I hope you make sense of all of this...gotta get down what I can before my boys badger me!!

Oh, just want to add...I remember a male Dr saying to me that "you women are all the same and forget what periods were like before you had children." He continued, saying," you know, you only bleed a tablespoon (can't remember if that was per cycle or day)...what a narrow minded man...I left his office thinking something was so wrong with me or maybe it is all in my mind...HAH...till the next period!
