Ready for the Battle

Hi Fellow Travellers,

I meet my oncologist tommorrow for the first time at GCUH to work out my treatment plan and type of chemo I am having then go down to pick up the info regarding my radiolology treatment after chemo. I am at the point where I have recovered well from my lumpectomy and axillary clearance surgery and just want to know what is next so I feel I have some control of what is happening in my life.

I am as ready as I think anyone could be in this situation and I am so appreciative of the level of care and support I have received from the medical staff to the volunteers and fellow BC survivors. I also have found the BCNA site so valuable as well as this network just in terms of the information and words of encouragement.  My beautiful husband has been my rock the last few months and I am blessed to have the love and support of family and friends and sometimes complete strangers who happen to come into your life at unexpected moments.

Already bought some soft bright chemo scarves and have booked myself into the next LGFB workshop. I have my nieces wedding in May so that gives me something to look forward to and it will be a special time for me to be with my family so I am hoping I will be well enough on the day (fingers crossed and hoping the timing of chemo treatment works out)

None of us ever thought to find ourselves in this life changing situation but with the right people surrounding you , it makes it a little bit less confronting and a little bit more manageable.

Step by step and day by day .....

Joanne ?

  • You are going to feel a whole lot better once you have your plan and I can promise you that the nurses in the Day Unit at GCUH where you will be having your chemo treatment are wonderful.  They give so much of themselves and are very reassuring.

What I have found is that anticipation is worse than participation.  You will be nervous leading up to your first treatment, which is very normal but you will find it to be an anticlimactic on the day.

It will be the week following where you emotions etc will be confusing.  Let the tears flow when they need to.  It is very healthy and you feel a whole lot better after ward.  I try to do this in the shower most times so as not to upset the family but of course there are times when I don't and that is when my hubby is of great support.  I find it is the little things that go wrong that tip me over the edge.

I like you have been given so much support from family, old friends and new friends who have rallied around me.  I often try to make contact with them before they contact me so that it isn't too one sided and I take a genuine interest in how they are travelling in life which takes my mind off myself and also lets them know I love them too.

I look forward to hearing how you got on today with your oncologist appointment and radiology appointment.  I hope you got to see the Cancer Nurse - Kate.  She has been a great support me and such a beautiful person.

    Lots of love
