Radiation treatment over

Hurrah!  I finally finished my course of radiation treatments yesterday.  A nice glass of semillon blanc to celebrate.  I am very, very red and sore - especially under my arm (armpit area) and top of chest and under breast.  I'm hoping it will start to improve in the next week or so.

I am currently putting on zinc and castor oil cream three times a day as recommended by the hospital staff (nurses and registrar).  Anyone else got any recommendations?  I tried aloe vera but it stung on the raw bits of my skin so had to quickly wipe it off!

Go back to see the medical oncologist on Tuesday to discuss my latest scan (done yesterday).  Fingers crossed....

  • Hi Debbie

My skin is really breaking down now so might go in to see the nurses tomorrow to see what they can do - very painful!  Good to hear that things start to settle in a couple of weeks - am counting them down!

    Good luck to you too!

  • Amy,

Yeah congratulations on finishing radiation. I finished 3 weeks ago, it was good to go home. My skin didn't break down until after I got home. Skin was not good underarm and upper chest area. Doc ordered dressings of Xeroform to broken skin area and after 2 days so much better. Gradually every day a new area would breakdown and then  2 weeks later all healed. I put sorbolene cream to unbroken areas and to everywhere now. Skin not red now or as hot.

Good luck and may your skin heal well.

  • Hi Amy

Congratulations on finishing your radiation. I certainly remeber how elated i felt after the last one. It has been just over a month since I finished mine and the 2 weeks after it finished were uneventful except my skin went a very dark brown - looked dirty!! I didn't have any skin issues with soreness or peeling but I am still  putting on cream twice a day and just stopped using the baby soap! You'll also start to get your energy levels and your life back if this is the end of your treatment.

    Good luck

    Sarah

  • Thanks Leonie and Tonya

I am peeling and feeling very sorry for myself.  Now I will begin the 2 week countdown for it to start to get better.  Will continue with the zinc and castor oil and also lots of moisturiser.  I think I burned so bad because most of this skin has never seen the sun before!

  • Congrats Amy for getting through your radiation treatments. You really deserve to celebrate. When my skin was sore and red my doc ordered hydrocortisone cream.I also found sorbolene/vit e cream and warm salt baths helped. It was all better about 2 weeks after it finished. You should plan some serious retail therapy now!
