Radiation Oncologist - Dr McCloud

We saw Dr Craig McCloud today. This is the same radiation oncologist that treated Dad 13 years ago. I'm sure it was surreal for Mum to come back all these year later and see a not so welcome familar face. Dr McCloud had close to the dryest sense of humour I have experienced. Half the time we didn't know whether he was being serious or trying to provide some humour. I admit that at times, it was akward.He explained the process of radiation and addressed any concerns Mum had.  Radiotherepy uses radiation to kill or damage cancer cells and stop them from growing and multiplying. They like to commence Radiation exactly 8 weeks after surgery. Mum has her planning appointment on the 23/07/2013 . This appointment helps ensure that enough radiation reaches the cancer but does as little damage as possible to the surrounding tissue. She will have x-rays and be marked in four tattoo spots - this will direct them to the bounderies for radiation. Mum will commence her radiotherapy on the 06/08/2013. Dr McCloud assured Mum that the treatment will not be a painful procedure however she may exprience side effects towards the fourth week. He explained that the most common side effect is skin irritation on the area being treated. Other patients experience fatigue - this is Mum's main concern as she is hoping to continue work throughout her therapy. We'll just have to wait & see... Mum will have radiation everyday for 5 1/2 weeksNext Stop - Bone Density Test...  Xx Catherine
