Prosthesis fittings
Hi girls. i have a question. When is the best time to be fitted for your prosthesis? I was told by my breast care nurse to wait until after chemo and your scar etc is stettled down. I also believe there are a few different sorts, like gel or ones for swimming etc. I have been told there are two places in Bundaberg to be fitted for a prosthesis. I like the idea of sports bras but cant get in or out of them as my arm is a bit stiff and i have to get my hubby to help get my in and out of my bra's and some tops. I'm thinking a sports bra with velcro on the shoulder straps and at the sides (underarms)would be a benefit and easier to get in and out of. What do you all think? Opinions welcome. I do wear my Mcgrath soft form bra that i received after my mastectomy but can only stand it for about an hour or two. I pretty much have not worn a bra since end oct last year.
Let me know what you recon.
Thanks
Chrissy D :) xoxoxo

It depends on where you are! I am off to Taiwan in November with some other BCNA and Cancer Council volunteers and we are taking over 2nd hand breasts and bras but only as many as we can fit in our luggae. I havent aoolied to the airline for excess baggae but will give it a go. I an in Vic but I know there are women from Tassie and Qld going too!

Hey Chrissy
I've just finished radium and used my softie they gave me at the beginning throughout. Actually couldn't wear anything at the end but was at the don't really care stage then. Spirit of Life are brilliant down in Bris and they even made a bra up for me when I went to my sisters wedding. (Put in pocket etc) I have a sports bra from there and it's comfy. But the other bras give you a better shape.(Can't believe I even say that now didn't give my boobs a thought at all really before now:)! I know what Sarah means about bending over, didn't realise at first cause the fake boobs are so comfy but they still carry a bit of weight and don't defy gravity in the bending over position! Being fitted was great think I've been weraing the wrong bra size for years although weight has fluctuated throughout last few years. Hope you find a comfy prothesis.
Take care
Holly
Thanks girls for all your advice and help. I have lots to work with now. I like the fake cammy Tonya. I have actually watched blokes at the check outs watching women bend over the trolley loading groceries have a good old perv. Serve them right for gorking i say.
Well i'm off to bed. night everyone,

Hi chrissy,
I wouldn't go near a sport's bra either!! I had trouble getting swimmers so I ended up getting a cheap one from Millers($13 end of season).I sewed a pocket inside for the fake boob and also sewed a piece of stretchy fabric across the v neckline cos it was a tad low.It looks great.Infact I've sewn quite a few fake camisoles across the neckline of my tops that were too low. It's too hot to wear a proper cami or singlet underneath. So I'm not shocking anyone in the supermarket when I lean over like Sarah is!!!

Hi Chrissy
I have a few Amoena bras that I bought in David Jones and from my lovely lady, but I have also bought some on-line via a UK website called Nicola Jane - www.nicolajane.com the bras are really pretty and following their measuring guide they actually fit perfectly they are also much cheaper than the ones here. I also bought a bikini from them which looks great was 30 UK pounds about $50 which is a lot cheaper than the Amoena swimsuit I bought for $120 ( also looks great on) in Spirit of life boutique in Brisbane lovely shop lots of choice they also do on-line too. It's an expensive business this BC.
Answering your question about movement no it pretty much stays put, but beware leaning over the shopping trolley in Woolies with a low cut top on cos those men get a hell of a shock when they look down your top and see no boob lol that'll teach them!! I have the prosthesis that goes in the bra pocket, I could not stand having it stuck to me with the amount of sweating I do it would fall off !! Also if you are doing radiation you really want to keep your skin in tip top condition before the treatment and not irritate it with adhesives and things.
Hope that helps all power to 36DD!!

PS leave the sports bras alone I haven't even tried to get into one! Too hard basket.........
Thank you Kathy,
I hope the researches can come up with something. A sports bra that doesnt go over your head would be brilliant.

Thanks Sarah & Tonya, amoena silicon seem to be the way to go. I have the berli bra from the breast nurse and another on i picked up at Big W. I find I can only wear them for a few hours. I'm going to look for some sexy ones coz these ones are very ordinary and definatly no sexy or really confortable.I also need new swimmers as my last ones have fallen to bits. Can anyone get into a sports bra? I cant. Also do the prosthesis bounce around and rub or are they stuck to your chest wall.
Sarah I am 36DD too. I feel very loopsided.
