Preventative surgery options?

Hi everyone,

I'm very new to this group and a little apprehensive as to what to write??? I have recently found out I am BRCA2 positive and so is my sister so we will be travelling this journey together. We are both having double masectomy's and I'm debating which type of reconstruction to have.

I am also having my ovaries and tubes out as soon as can be scheduled. I have read a few posts on here and to be honest I am amazed at the strength and determination of some of you brave ladies and I'm hoping some of you may have some advice to share.........looking forward to hearing from you.

xx

  • Hi Debbie,

Like yourself and your sister I have the BRCA2 gene also. I know at first it is a complete shock! You will both be ok.

I had a bilateral mastectomy in Dec 2013 and 6 weeks later had a hysterectomy.

My breast care nurse advised me to jump on and join the reconstruction group as I was unsure with what path I wanted to go down.

I am so thrilled that I did that. It is so wonderful to be able to share stories and have the support and advise from others.

I am due to go in for my TRAM Flap reconstruction on the 22nd Jan 2015.

    I am super excited!!

    Take care

    Hi DebbieKC,

It looks like some of the women in the online network have already shared some valuable experiences with you and I was going to jump in and tell you about the private 'Breast reconstruction' group ( http://www.bcna.org.au/group/61026 ) but it looks like you have found it already :-)

I hope you get the support you need to make some of the difficult decisions ahead for you and your sister.

If you need a hand finding your way around - give me a shout.

  • Hi Leisa

Thanks for your reply.....I think i'm leaning towards same recon as you as that is what the plastic surgeon has recommended. It is such a huge op that i guess i just want to be well informed.

I figure as may as well have the tummy tuck too and make the most out of the op!!!!

    Good luck to you too

  • Hi Debbie,

Firstly I'm sorry to hear about you and your sister having the gene but you both will be fine.

I've just had surgery for a double mastectomy and for me reconstruction will be 2 years and I've decided to have a tummy tuck where they use the skin from my tummy to make new boobies and I also get the flat tummy I've always wanted.

Good luck and hope to chat with you soon
