Post surgery

Hi ladies, can anyone offer some advice about seroma's as I think I have two on each side just under my armpits near where I had drains removed last Wednesday. It's really hard and uncomfortable and getting slowly bigger, what should I do?

  • Do you have an appointment to see your surgeon again soon? If there are any signs of redness or you feel unwell or develop a temperature this could be an indication of infection. In this case you need to see a doctor ASAP. If it is just seroma swelling then your surgeon may need to drain the fluid from the areas. I had seroma fluid drained weekly for about 6 weeks post surgery. This is painless and took only a few minutes in the surgeon's rooms each time. Once the surgeon was happy that the build up of fluid had slowed, she said that my body would manage the absorption of the remaining fluid over time. I then found a Lymphodema specialist who did lymphatic massage to help the lymph system to absorb this. However I still have one area that has a hard area of seroma, near where my drain was and it is 7 months since my op. None of the doctors seem concerned and I will see what the surgeon says when I see her again next May. Good luck with it, have your surgeon or GP check it out and watch for signs of infection, just in case. Take care. Deanne xx
