Post mastectomy pain
Hi All,
This is my first post... so here goes!
I had a total mastectomy in July 2011 and nearly 6 months later, I am still experiencing pain and find I am unable to tolerate wearing my prosthesis for more than very brief periods.
I had 3 surgeries between early June and late July and then had about 12 weeks of seroma, (fluid collecting under the wound site,) which was drained 1 -2 weekly.
Initially I had severe pain and hypersensitivity of the whole left side of my chest, but that settled down after 4 weeks or so. The wound healed well and looks pretty good, but I have continued to have pain around the chest, under the wound. I am numb along the scar and some 5-6 cm either side. The pain seems to change location and quality, but I am surprised that it is still so uncomfortable after so many months.
During my last appointment with my surgeon, she said that some women have 'unexplained' pain and left it at that.
To complicate things, I have myalgic encephalomyelytis/chronic fatiue syndrome and fibromyalgia. I wonder if it is a combination of these conditions making the pain worse and more persistent. These health problems definitely delayed my recovery from the surgeries.
I'd be interested in hearing from anyone with similar experience and what you might have found helps.
Cheers,
Anne
