Post Mastectomy Pain - sand paper like

  • Hi everyone,

  • I'm looking for anyone who has had ongoing sensitivity after a mastectomy.
  • I had a mastectomy with a lymph node biopsy on April 30. My drains were out within 4 days.Thankfully I've not needed any fruther treatment. About 10 days post surgery i started to develop sensitivity. The best way I can describe it is like sandpaper being rubbed over the area. Whilst it has now decreased a little in intensity it is still quite uncomfortable. I told my surgeon about it today but he seemed a bit puzzled by it. So for now I'm tolerating it and hoping it will go soon.
  • Has anyone had similar experiences?

  • Good thought ... I won't be rushing to wear it full time. And am heading off from dismal Melbourne to sunny Queensland for a couple of weeks in a couple of weeks. I think the warmth and a change of scenery will do me good too.

  • Hey sheila,

dont rush yourself with the bra thing. I didnt get my prosthesis until about 2 months after the mastectomy. I found the Ahh Bra to be really comfy until my wounds felt better and could wear a bra

    xx

  • Thanks Tania ... mine has been all the way across the incision area but has thankfully begun to decrease in intensity. There appears to be light at the end of the tunnel. Now I can look forward to being fitted for my prosthesis in a few days ... hopefully I will be able to wear it and a bra comfortably.

  • Thanks for your info Chris ... much appreciated. Thankfully the sensitivity has eased over the last week or so ... still not perfect but it is giving me hope that sooner or later it will go completely.

    Thanks again

  • Hi Sheila, I too had a lot of sensitvity with my second prophylactic mastectomy. I had a return to theatre about 3 weeks after surgery to have a very large blood clot removed. This seemed to create a very sensitive area. Wearing a bra was nealy impossible, as where it came in contact with my skin it just drove me crazy. It was like hyposensitive skin, due to irritated nerve endings. It took a while to settle down, but has now completely gone. I had reconstruction at the same time, and the stretching expander kept irritating the skin. Hang in there, as I am sure it will go. It is still early days. Love Chris xx
  • Hi there,

Yes, I did have that feeling when wearing tank tops. It would rub my underarm. I understand it as the nerve endings are starting to heal. It lasted about a month or so I guess...Hang in there. It gets better
