Port

I need a new port, which will be my third! Has anyone had a port inserted on the side of an auxillary clearance? Has anyone had a powerport (has 3 little dots on it) inserted in a public hospital in Melbourne? or where did you get your powerport put in as i know a few of you have them. Did they knock you out for port insertion? Have you had CT contrast put thru the port in public hospital?

The reason for so many questions is from previous experience. My public hospital seems to live in the dark ages and the surgery team doesn't know about them!! I know the beauty of them is being able to use contrast thru them but if they don't know how to use them there is no use having one!!

    Hi Chris,

    You seem to be having some bad luck! I can't advise as the veins are still holding out, but Michelle seems to know what she is talking about. Demand a booklet and bracelet!  I am sure you will be able to "direct" them.....

    Hi - I have a powerport with the 3 little dots on it.  Mine was implanted on the right side ( 2 nodes only taken) under anaesthetic.  It was used for all my chemos (weekly for 12 weeks) and I am having it removed this month, also under anaesthetic.  Some of the nurses in my Oncology clinic were unfamiliar with it but found it very easy after instruction. They have a booklet which you are given to take to each session, also a bracelet to wear in hospital.  Hope your staff can get hold of a booklet, and that you can get one. Your third! - you are probably more up to date than they are!  All the very best - Michelle
