Port removal

Hi ladies I finished chemo 5 weeks ago ( thank goodness) my port end moved so every chemo I had an x Ray to check if they could use port I start radio next week today I got an unexpected call that port could be removed on Thursday.  I use to be fine with needles operations but now I'm not guess that comes from way too many experiences?  I'll just have local but I'm dreading it I understand it's no biggy  dear me I was less stressed over losing my boob - any tips ?

  • Hi Alsopt, I think I would feel the same way with my new fear of needles. Could you ask for a muscle relaxant like valium beforehand? I had this for a procedure with local a few years ago and it really helped.

I had my port put in a week and  half ago. Had oncology nurses use it today for the first time to take blood and it was not how I expected. took 3 goes to get it in and then hurt like having a thumb tack pushed through my chest. Now really worried about using it tomorrow for chemo. And here I thought it would be better than all those cannula attempts.

Just wondering what did you mean when you say your port end moved? What did you experience? I have 15 move chemo and targeted therapies to go. Will finish in December so long way to go.

  • Ask how long the local will take. A few seconds, a minute? Then prepare yourself accordingly, its only a few ..., breath in and out deeply and wiggle your toes. The concentration does kind of help and then your all done and good.
