Hi Celeste,
I don't have the Emla patches or anything to numb the area either. My first access was quite painless and quick and I hadn't been given an Emla patch for the first. We do all have different pain thresholds and personally I think I have had more painful blood tests. At the hospital I go to, they offer ice if you don't have a patch which apparently does the same sort of thing.
I have no pain after it is over either. My personal opinion with the port is that because it is up against the chest wall it gives it a more stable and firm area to put the needle in and that makes it so quick. I actually had to convince the nurses that I didn't need any numbing agents as they said everyone used them. They are used to me now.
All the best with it.
Take care.
