Operate or Radiation, That's The Question

Hi all, I saw the Surgeon during the week and my 2nd brain tumour has grown 2mm in 8 weeks. Now they have to do something, it could be an operation to remove it with possible permanent weakness in my right leg. I'm still on crutches after the removal of a tumour in October.
Then there's radiation which possibly means going into the city an hour away & have radiation, I don't know how many or how often but it will burn around the tumour but leaves it there. After just going into the city to see the Surgeon I had no energy from Tuesday evening till Thursday morning so I couldn't possibly go in too often to have radiation.
When I got home from the city the Surgeon and Oncologist had spoken and the Oncologist thought radiation was the best way so they'll go with that. I have an appointment on Friday to ask why it's the best way & explain I don't have that sort of energy with every other test I still haven't organised.
Just wondering if anyone else has come across this scenario and knows what is best, as much as I don't want more brain surgery & rehab possibly afterwards I don't want to know it's still there & will worry about it when it comes to my next MRI.
Can radiation stop a tumour growing & be monitored along with any other nasties that might pop up now that it's secondary Stage 4 and comes from the breast cancer.

Hi @DebbieMc. Thinking of you. How did yesterday's appointment go?

It went well & it looks like stereotactic (sp) is the way to go but before anything more is decided I have to have a blood test & a full body scan which is an all day thing at the local hospital. Depending on the result of that (hopefully all clear) then I'll probably have to have the radiation. It's in the city an hour away but if it has to be done then that's what I have to do. xo
  • Hi @DebbieMc. Thinking of you. How did yesterday's appointment go?
  • @lrb_03 Hi there, it's stereotatic radiotherapy which I found might be able to be done a bit closer to home. Thank you for your good wishes.

  • Hi @DebbieMc, is the massive dose what they call cyber knife, or stereotatic radiotherapy? I've read good reports of results from that, without a lot of longer term side effects.

Hope you get some more good information from your appoinment on Friday x
  • Hi @DebbieMc, I saw a acupuncturist and traditional Chinese medicine specialist as an adjunct to my radiation treatment and it helped tremendously with my fatigue. Might be worth considering and discussing with your treatment team. Big hugs and best wishes to you 💕💕💕
  • @primek As the radiation has to be to a small area it's an hour away to go for treatment, I don't want to be away from home as I've just adopted a rescue dog after my 14yo dog had to be put down during the 6 week hospital stay in October,November last year. (I was born & bred till 9 in Broken Hill & my Dad's side of the family all grew up there).

Even getting transport to take me will still wear me out, I have lovely friends who would take turns in taking me but I don't think I could physically go every day. I could go once and be hit by a massive dose of radiation but worried about what that would do to me as I live alone. I guess speaking with the Oncologist on Friday will help my decision.

  • I know that in Adelaide, the Cancer Council bring people in from their lodge each day for radiation.  Perhaps give them a call tomorrow.  It won't help with the real question but may solve the logistical issue for you.
  • All the best for your treatment, @DebbieMc  xx  Sorry I can't answer your questions re the Rads tho

I echo @DebbieMc  - I stayed at Port Mac hospital during my radiation (the closest town doing it) otherwise would have been 1.5hr drive to & from - so elected to stay at the Rotary Lodge there for the 4 weeks.  It was very low cost & so comfy (just like an upmarket Motel.)   If accommodation is available nearby - it will make the radiation period much easier to take, than driving there every day xx

    Take care  xx
  • Do you live far from tbe hospital?. Perhaps cancer council can assist with accommodation close by or transport to hospital. I think radiation is normal small doses daily for a number of weeks us the norm. They definitely would closely be monitoring it's growth flowing treatment .
