Hi Trina
I hope you are hanging in there. I told my 3 & 6 yr old boys & 8 yr old daughter that I had a bad lump in my breast & the docs needed to cut it out. Then after the lumpectomy when I got the bc result & unclear margins i told them they didn't get it all & docs may even have to cut my whole boob off to get it all...I said it casually so as not to make a big deal of it & to plant the seed until I confirmed it once I knew. That went down ok...my 3 yr old thought it was funny they would 'cut, cut' my boob off. I said I'd finished with my boobs anyway so wouldn't matter, & no one would be able to tell as I'd wear a pretend one in my bra (8 yr old daughter was worried what I'd look like). A few wks later when there was reading material coming into the house with cancer written on it, I told 6& 8 yr olds it was breast cancer but they got it all & was fixed. I was lucky enough to just need the mastectomy & hormone blocking treatment (tomoxifen) but no chemo or rad cause my lymph nodes weren't involved.
I hope this is of some help, remember though I am no expert, but just went with what felt right (I also discussed it with the kids teachers too).
Take care & thinking of you.
Love Sam xo
