Oncology rehab

Hi all

Its been quite a while since I posted. I am now 11 months into my 14 months of treatment which has been complicated with treatments for another illness that I have. On a whole though, I think I'm doing ok.

I just wanted to let you all know that I have been attending an oncology rehab program through Eastern Health in Melbourne. The program is designed for people at all stages of the cancer battle, some still having treatment, some dealing with stage 4, some finished treatment years ago and all different types of cancer.  There are old and young people, male and females. They deal with the physical, emotional, financial, legal and social affects that a cancer diagnosis can have. It has been 2 mornings a week for 7 weeks.

I wanted to mention this, as I have found the program to be hugely beneficial and I would encourage anyone who gets the opportunity to attend rehab to do so.  Not only have I found it beneficial but so have the others attending. As you can imagine, as they deal with all types of cancer, places are limited, so if you get the opportunity, grab it with both hands.

  • Tomorrow is my last session and I'm so sad that it's finishing up. It has helped me on so many levels. So glad you enjoyed it so much too xox

    Hi Karen,

What a great support service! When you have 5 minutes ;-) It would be great to get this service listed in the Directory on our website.

The Directory is where people can suggest services they have used throughout their treatment and want to recommend for others.

If you want to list it - all you need to do is go to the suggest a service form on our website - https://www.bcna.org.au/services/suggest

  • Hi I did this program in 2013 at Eastern Health too...

Best thing I ever did - highly recommend it.

Other hospitals have similar programs. not all hospitals. Try googling oncology rehab in your area.! -)

This program changed my life. I was really struggling and have kept friends to this day with the physiotherapist who ran the program when i was there. She even got me into a course so I can work in oncology rehab in the future!

  • Hi Hazel. The place I do my rehab was the pilot program and has been running for 5 years. They have had such fabulous results that they are now being established working on this model at other health facilities. It's a shame that they aren't more readily available as it has been so beneficial. Hopefully it will become part of treatment as a norm Xox
  • I'm working too Rowdy but I do take time off for my appointments and I just consider these appointments. I am fortunate that my work are very supportive xox
  • Hi Karen, glad to hear you are doing ok. These courses sound great, I am back at work now, I didn't hear of anything like that in Queensland. I am 13 months post treatment and it sounds like a good idea as we need help and advice throughout the whole process. Hope you continue to do well, all the best,

    Hazel xx

  • Hi Karen that sounds great. Unfortunately I work full time and all these things are during the week.

Sounds like you are doing well. I'm also getting to the end of herceptin 2 to go yay. Take care.
