No hair thanks to Taxotere!

I've begun my recovery from ending chemo 22/6/12. Tuesday 3/7 would have been my last hit, so its almost a month past, and my body knows I havent had chemo, I swear im having withdrawels! Ive had a check up, and im ok, but weird things are happening; tired, angry at times, hungry, horny, headaches now and then, lymphodema more so where Ive not had a problem with it, craving a jim beam and coke!

I have also spoken to some women who were on Taxotere, and they finished chemo ages ago, and one woman after a year still has no hair! Two still have no eyelashes or eyebrows after 7 months, and minimal hair growth, about 1inch worth. Women they know have had either little or no hair regrowth! Taxotere can cause permanent hair loss! I hope I dont experience that!!! My eyes are watering all the time, people think Im crying. Its winter, and I wish i had my hair back!

  • My hair also got prickles before each hit, then dissapear again. I have very little hair left on my eyelashes and eyebrows to the point of saying about 4 on one, and 6 on the other! I put some mascara on awhile ago and smudged all up my eyelid, it was hilarious! I too look about 10yrs older than i 1st looked and i have rashy spots under my eyes from the watering. Oil of Olay helps.

Good luck with your last chemo hun, You've done this just as hard as me! And its been a hell of a road! Im in aw of you sticking it out to the last one, i couldnt, and im glad, I feel good  compared to how I would feel if i took that last one on the 3rd, I have no doubt Id be in hospital now. Im aware i have agressive cancer, but i still feel Ive had more than my fair share! xxxxxxxxxxxxx

  • I think i read the same US site as you! lol, i freaked readng about the women who had no hair growth! But you've made me smile thinking that by summer Ill have a sporty shorty :) sinead o'conner, eat ya heart out! lol xxxx

  • Gayle,

My eyes also water ALL the time,so muchso that I have an awful rash starting under my eyes and the skin is sore and the tears sting.

I don't think my taxotere hair cut will stay becasue I get tiny amounts of prickles just before each cycle at the moment which then dissapear with eacy cycle, and I only have 1 more cycle to go (YAY!!).

I think while it does happen I think it is rare for the hair to not grow back (I still have most of my eyelashes and eyebrows).

Mich - Thanx for the Advice, I will take that and run with it. did she say how long aft er the last chemo you should have the last shave and let the little prickles become an head of hair? I have my last taxotere (& carboplatin) on 16 July (YAY!!!) and like I said above get these teeny tiny tiny little prickles that you can't see but I can just feel that seem to fall out again with each cycle.

  • Thanks heaps Tonya cause there were some positives and negatives in your blog.  I will grab hold of the positives and run with them.

I do have some hair on my head all over and it seems to be growing so I think I will get a head of hair back.  I want to get it shaved again in a few weeks when most of the chemo is out of my system so then my hair has a better chance of growing back without any chemo causing havoc to the hair cells still.  Hopefully that is a good plan.  The lady I bought the wig from who is also a hairdresser and does the Look Good Feel Better sessions suggested it so I am sure she has seen lots of bald heads, buz cut heads and full heads of hair and hopefully she is spot on with her advice???

    Take care, thank you.

    Mich xoxo

  • Funny how you and i are inline with each other, my radio is on the 19th, rather thats wen i get mapped and have scans done, i think i start the monday after that. My nails are a funny colour also. My little toenail fell off, painless, and my nails have gone a smokers brown colour, with ridges. My toenails are really dark! I have a slight numbness in my big toes but my feet are peeling something awful from them being burned by the tax!! I can peel sheets off! And it doesnt hurt. Hubby said im like a snake shedding skin! My palms of my hands are also dry and peeling in small amounts, so i keep my hands and feet moisterised at least 3 times a day. My Lymphodema has begun to bother me, im having massages by a nurse every wednesday and doing my excercises at home, but Im pretty sure im going to wind up with a sock! Fook it all! I use my right arm alot as im right handed. The Lymphodema has expanded all the way up to my neck, it feels thick and stiff. I had this stupid idea that when i stopped chemo, Id return to normal! Obviously not! lol. xxxxxxxxx

  • Hi Gayle, I finished taxotere at the end of March 2011, and have now had 7 haircuts. It did take many months to come back, but I stopped wearing my wig at the end of September last year. My hair is still curly, and I am having a haircut about every 7 to 8 weeks, and it is about 15 cm long. My eyebrows fell out well after my hair did, and though some improvement, are still very patchy. I have become good at drawing on eyebrows with a powder now, and my eye lashes didn't fall out. I did suffer badly from watery eyes, which is really due to very dry eyes. I found that liquid tears or gel was very soothing. I still have dry eyes, but this was a problem I had long before chemo, although chemo did exacerbate it . Be patient, as I am sure you will get your hair back. My hair follicles started to darken about 12 weeks after my last chemo, and then it came in quickly. Good luck with it all. Love Chris xx

  • Hi Gayle
My eyes are watering all the time toooooo.  I had my last chemo (Taxotere) on 20/6.  My hair is little prickles all over but I think I will shave it all off again in a week or so so that when my hair growns back (IF IT GROWS BACK mmmmmmmm) it grows back minus the chemo drain to it.  Hopefully it does grow back......  My nails also have funny white blotches and lines all over them but haven't got infected YET!!!!

The dry eyes drive me crazy.  I have been using a gel for dry eyes which seems to help somewhat.

I start my Radiotherapy for 7 weeks on 18/7.
