New diagnosis

I have just been diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer. I'm 39yo and underwent surgery this week. I'm yet to see an oncologist but have been advised that it's most likely I'll have both chemo and radiotherapy as future treatments. I have no family history and have read stuff about the gene testing but am finding it very confusing. I realize some women also elect to have a double mastectomy and their ovaries removed -is this after testing positive to the carrying the gene? Obviously I wish I wasn't posting on this page but that's the hand I've been dealt. Any advice / information on this cancer would be appreciated. Thanks Tammy

  • All depends on how your body copes with the chemo drugs and the symptoms. But do surrender, don't push yourself and get rest when you need it, let family and friends help where they can. When I here about the names of chemo drugs used, each patient has a different combination of drugs, so the symptoms are different. I became so weak and sensitive to air-conditioned buildings, blood test results not good, my oncologist said for me to take 6 months off work. Too weak and exhausted even to watch TV. I mostly read novels in bed and slept alot. Slowly went back to work 3hours 2 days a week, then built up to 35 hour week over a three month period. Now I'm fighting fit years later. Every body is different.
  • Hi Tammy

Its been exactly one year since I had your same diagnosis.  I have survived  and I am starting to feel better.  I try not to dwell on it and get on with my life.  Im back at work three days a week and back driving my kids to there various sporting commitments.

There is sometimes to much information.  In the end i just listened to my Doctors.

    Wishing you strength

  • Hi Tammy

Just like entering the big city, try not to get over whelmed at what is in front of you , just try and take the journey one traffic light at a time. Getting all the information you can will give you the power to make choices you will feel comfortable with.

I have just had my gene testing done and was neg for BRCA1/2 mutation but have a variant in my BRCA 2 gene. Not conclusive for bc but enough of a danger for the docs to still recommend the removal of the other breast and my ovaries. I am at the stage now of making these decisions after having a mastectomy, chemo and radiation to my chest wall. I am looking at having reconstruction done at the same time but that again presents a new set of problems.

Once I was told I had bc  my husband I made a decision to take it a step at a time and deal with each stage in my treatment as it came along. I had my surgery, recovered enough to tackle chemo then recovered again and did radiation. Only then did we look at the gene testing to find a cause and look for answers and ways to prevent this happening to me again. My advice to you is to get well physically, mentally and emotionally between treatments so you are making your decisions with a clear head and dont waste your energy on things too far down the track as things may be better than you first thought and you may not have to make some of those decisions. Focus your energy on getting better in the here and now and the future will take care of itself.

I wish you all the best and you will be in my thoughts and prayers
