Just been diagnosed with phyllodes tumour with a sarcoma in the middle malignant of course. Is there anyone else out there as I am told both are rare . Just my luck tossing up between lumpectomy and ...
Hello Jeanie,
Clearly you have some very intense dicision making ahead of you. My only piece of advice is to not allow anyone to make those decisions for you. Be informed and ask questions regardless of how silly you may think them to be. It's also important to conduct your own research. Be knowledgable. Lumpectomy allows breast tissue to remain in reasonable shape and good surgeons will carry out the procedure with a minimal amount of scarring. Also with clear margins, the tumour will have less chance of reoccurring.
Don't be in a hurry to have a mastectomy without consultation. Make your own decision. Consider also recovery times for both procedures. After all, you'll be the one looking at your chest each time you have a shower (apologies for being blunt but this is true).
Four years ago I was diagnosed with 5 cm benign phyllodes and I had a lumpectomy. Unfortunately, two years later the diagnosis was triple negative cancer to the other breast and I had a lumpectomy to that breast. Considering that I've been through both situations, I firmly believe that self esteem is a powerful motivator to recovery.
Good luck. My thoughts will be with you.
