Multidisciplinary Team Recommends BRCA Gene Testing

Being the first Wednesday of the month the multidisciplinary team met today to discuss Mum's (& all other patients) situations. Mum contacted the McGrath Foundation Nurse, Jodie (June is currently on leave) to enquire what they had decided. Jodie advised that they agreed that radiation & potentially hormone therpy would be the best path for her however they have also suggested that she undergo genetic therapy. Jodie advised that due to her family history they recommended that she be tested for the breast gene - BRCA Gene. This gene has received alot of publlicity in the last couple of months since Angelina Jolie announced she had a double mastectomy after finding out she carried the gene. Jodie advised that if mum agrees to be tested, she could either go to Melbourne or they come to Albury every 3 months. They are expected to have their next session in August. They have suggested Mum undergo the Gene testing prior to being placed on the hormone therapy as due to Family history it may not be the best option for her.If you are interested in reading more about the family gene here is a link - http://www.bcna.org.au/about-breast-cancer/breast-cancer-family
