You are right it is a decision that only you can make, but I understand you wanting other people's thoughts so you can think things through from as many angles as possible.
I have had a left breast mastectomy, chemo and am now having radiotherapy before going on hormone therapy. This leaves me with a 19% chance of recurrence in the next 10 years (I am 47). If I could reduce this further by having a second mastectomy I would. Unfortunately for me this would make no difference for recurrence. It would only reduce the risk of getting a new cancer in the right breast.
I am nevertheless considering a second mastectomy and then double reconstruction in the future simply because as Janey says, I would do anything to avoid having to go through all this again. The oncologist says that having had cancer in one breast I am at a slightly increased risk of getting it in the other breast.
I think seeing a counsellor is a good suggestion, if you are struggling with the decision. Wishing you all the best no matter what decision you come to. Deanne xx
