Hi Lea, my reconstruction was all covered by medicare and insurance. There is an item number for this type of reconstruction. It is not classed as cosmetic surgery. Did your mum inquire and let them know that she was having a mastectomy as well?. I was in a Private hospital, but my fund covered all my hospital stay, except the one off annual excess of $500. The Dr was pretty expensive, but I managed to get back 100% of the schedule fee. ( 75% from medicare and 25% from BUPA.) My Dr charges above this rate, but a lot do not. Check with the surgeon about an item number, and then double check with medicare and your fund. There is no way that this should be in the same bracket as a breast inlargement. Hope all goes well.
