So sorry to hear your bc diagnosis.It sometimes put you in shock and gives you very little time to research.Welcome to this site where you will get info and support - we understand what you are facing.I had a mastectomy just over 2 years ago. If you haven't already, then order the 'My journey kit"-it's full of all the information you need and will get you up to speed- and it's free.The other item to order is your free Berlei post op bra and soft padded insert.Your breast care nurse or doctor can order this from Bcna.After surgery,you will have a binder around your chest and possibly a drain to carry around.Make sure you have button up pjs and some loose tops to wear.It might be a few weeks before you put a bra on with soft insert.It will do the job for a little while.They say to wait until any swelling goes down before you get fitted for a prosthesis(most Myers stores do this) I got mine about 6 weeks post op.It's really natural and you can't tell.However,I can't wear low necklines.Medicare will reimburse you for the cost of the prosthesis($400?) You can buy special swimmers or "doctor"your own which is what I did.I just use a soft padded insert but you can buy special gel type inserts(bit pricey).It takes a bit of getting used to losing a breast and your nurse may take the dressing down to check the wound the next day-make sure they give you some pain killers beforehand.This seems to ease the shock.I was surprisingly ok with it.It's hard to predict your reactions sometimes with this journey.The operation itself is not too bad and you get pain relief. I went home after 3 days dragging the drain with me.Tracey,just take each bit at a time otherwise it can seem overwhelming but by all means,do your research.Ask any questions or express your fears here.There is always someone to "chat"with and we understand cos we have been through it or are going through it like yourself- you won't feel so alone.I hope I've answered your queries but remember each woman's treatments may vary to another.
