Meeting with my breast surgeon

I saw my breast surgeon yesterday afternoon with my hubby and I am now booked in for a lumpectomy on 13th Jan. (Private operating suites are closed over Christmas and New Year). Because the cancer is contained within the duct the wait will not make any difference. The size of the calcification is 13 mm.

As I also have comedo necrosis present within the calcification my treatment will be more aggressive thus the radiation therapy. If the necrosis shows up in the surrounding tissue after it is removed in the first op then I will have to return for a re-incision within the following couple of weeks to have more tissue a removed.  I will still have radiation therapy ch and talking to a friend who had the same) to make sure the cancer does not return. He said if this does happen my outlook is still excellent (98%).

I'm becoming quite an expert with all this. The good Professor was very pleasant and was quite impressed with my knowledge after questioning me on what i knew (it was like being questioned as a student again- now that takes me back a few year!) He then explained my mammogram to me and pointed out the calcification which can clearly be seen - amazing what the breast looks like on the inside.  He said that I am extremely lucky that the calcification is only in one area and is relatively small and that it has been caught early (thank God for Breast Screen). I'll keep my fingers crossed that the surrounding tissue will be clear when removed.

He then asked about my weight and indicated that it would be better if I did not lose any weight. I was 52K  during my recent holiday but gained a couple of kilos during the month, luckily.

I'm feeling positive and I am just looking at this as a small glitch in life. At the moment it's about taking one step at a time, being fully informed and just getting on with the enjoyment of life  If the treatment is more aggressive than expected, the outlook is still a 98% survival rate. As the good Professor said ,"if you are going to get cancer of the breast - this is the best one to have as the outlook is so good".

I had a great Circuit workout this morning. No pain internally from the biopsy when lifting heavier weights and comfortable afterwards. Certainly found myself breathing hard and raising a sweat. I've decided to workout 6 days a week ... one day of circuits, one day of 30 mins treadmill walking at incline and vice versa.   It will definitely keep me fit until my forthcoming operation.

Onwards we march ...  people have said to me "what a horrible Christmas present you've been given" on reflection I realise that it is probably "the best Christmas present ever" because my cancer has been caught early.

There's always positives in everything ...
