Medic alert Bracelet

Hi girls, just wondering what you all do to remember not to use the affected arm for blood pressure, bloods etc. Went to the doctor last week and as he was a locum I had to explain about the breast cancer and treatments and then he said might as well take your BP while you're here. Without thinking I offered the affected arm and he said no you can't do it on that one. How do you remind yourself? Did think a tattoo bracelet would be handy but can't do that either! Perhaps I could right it on my forehead and everyone else can remind me!

  • Had a look and they have some nice bracelets that don't look too bad either. Thanks Michelle

  • Thanks for that Michelle, that would be rather handy at least in the meantime while the brain isn't in gear and it will look like all the other fundraising bands you see people getting around with.

  • Just another idea.  I'm a bangle cuff girl and like mixing it up and don't really want to wear identifying jewellery ! At best this happens once a year for me and my solution is just to pause and in doing so I can remember or identify the arm ; just a faint sense that is still some tension in my armpit although surgery  there two years ago.  I was asked to identify which breast was affected and I don't have it on automatic so I just had to check it out.  I guess there might be an emergency situation where they need to access an arm but I'll take my chances!

  • That's one thing I never forget. It's been 11 years since the first breast cancer and 2 since the latest one. My arm is still swollen and pains occasionally from the axillary clearance . Get a medic alert bracelet if you can't remember .

  • Thanks Michelle, didn't think one existed.. will be getting one for sure!

  • Hi Maria,

Mediband makes a rubber medical ID alert wristband, inscribed "no BP or needles in this arm".  I bought one from my surgeon's office for $10 last year.  It's pink, and comes in small, medium, large & extra large (150mm/180mm/202mm/220mm).  It's called a Lymphedema Alert B0922L.  Try www.mediband.com. ; Very handy for hospitals when you need to remind people.

    Cheers,  Michelle xx
