Me again

Hi ladies first i hope you all had a very happy mothers day.

I have more questions lol seems that is what i do best here at the moment,

Have any ladies got wigs and if so how has that gone. Am tossing up the idea of getting one because i really don't want to look like a "cancer patient" to the rest of the world but on the other hand is it worth all the money they cost... any suggestions ladies??

Second my breast care nurse told me about the look good feel better workshop that is going to happen at my hospital later this month and i was wondering if anyone here has been to one and what they could tell me about it.

Thanks again ladies don't know where i would be with out you all lol.

  • Hi Sandy,

I bought an expensive wig(real hair)which looks good but it was sooo hot and uncomfortable to wear.I was bald throughout the spring/summer and had started Tamoxifen which cranks up hot flushes so nearly went nuts with anything on my head.I mostly wore caps, scarves and bandanas. And when my hair came in abit I swapped to headbands.I only wore the wig for special occasions and only for a few hours.I bought most of my headgear from usa -- www.headcovers.org They were cheap and delivered to your door. You"ll soon become an expert in head management cos it takes ages for your hair to grow back to a short, wearable length.

  • Hi Fran,

Think i am going to be going along the same route you did, i have got myself a wig and some beautiful scarves so i think the wig will be for when i am out and maybe for work and the scarves will be for home, but i also have that same though about is the wig straight and so on. The hair is all gone now and for the moment i am just using the scarves, will be going to a Look good feel better workshop in a couple of weeks so am sure to get some helpful hints from there,

Once again thanks for your input.

    Take Care

  • Hi Sandy

I got two wigs from America and was so happy with them :)  I did trim the fringe of one of them to make it a bit shorter but other than that they were great.  The colours are so natural looking and I have had many people complement me on my "new hairstyle"!!

I am not so sure about the $75 from the Cancer Fund - I don't think there is any payment in WA?  Not as far as I'm aware anyway...  You can hire wigs from the Cancer Council for free for as long as you need them, which is also helpful.

The website that I bought my wigs from was www.makemeheal.com and the service was fantastic - quick delivery and my two wigs cost me about $200.

    Hope this helps,

    Louise

  • Hi Sandy,

I've been to the "look good feel good" session. It is done by volunteers from Cosmetic industry.   Yes go and have fun.  Try to book in the session that fits in your chemo cycle - i.e.. atleast 4to 5 days after your chemo treatment, which give you time to recover from it.  Book in asap, as they get book up quite quickly.  I had loads of fun, meeting other women like me and just focusing on looking pretty and forget the doctors/scans/drugs/tireness etc!!  My Chemo Style Group photo was taken during the lgfg.org.au workshop ... love it.

From personal experience, making the effort to make yourself look good can lift your spirits and thoes around you.  (I had to, as I had a 2 yr & 6 yr old at the time - Mummy was the World to them, I smile they smile)

As for Wig - are you with Private Health Insurance, as they pay for Wig as part of Prosthesis, give them a call.     I found wigs were useful for the "down" days, they were my "Social Prosthesis".  (esp when I wanted  I to feel normal and look normal infront of the mirror or going to a social event)

check out related Chemo Style blogs ...
